Sub-series consists of field cards created by city assessors as they recorded features of each property to be used in determining the assessed value of the property. After assessment 'street books' were phased out between 1919-1920, these field cards were used to record details about each property (both land and the buildings) and were updated yearly. Assessors noted details in pencil and included information on: plumbing, roof type, heating, occupancy type (single, family, apartment, etc.),number of rooms, commercial or residential nature of the property. See the samples below - the information recorded changed over the years. In some cases, specifically during the 1950's-1960's, black and white photographs of the property were appended to the card, as were newspaper ads/articles noting property sales, auctions or other situations. Many of the photographs are now missing. The field cards sometimes refer to a Plan No. which corresponds to the numbered Assessment Plan sheet (see 102-19G). The cards also refer to a Roll No. which refers to the Assessment Roll (see series 102-19A). 102-19B

Sub-series consists of property plans used by the City of Halifax Assessment Office in assessing property values. Each sheet shows property boundaries and dimensions (in ft.), and the footprint of any buildings, including porches. For many properties the property owner is pencilled in and was updated over time(it is uncertain for what time period ownership is accurate). Changes to street names and street-lines were recorded over time; some property sub-divisions are over-written. The footprint and name of some buildings (mainly public, large commercial and industrial buildings) are on the base map. Also shows railways, piers, wharves, tram lines. Only the Halifax peninsula is included, not the western areas annexed from the County in 1969. See attachment below of the specifications for the Assessment Plan tendered by the City Engineer - from Deputy Mayor Henry Colwell fonds (CR13.2) 102-19G
