Mahone Bay Museum Photograph Collection

The collection consists primarily of photographs documenting the history of the town of Mahone Bay and the immediate surrounding areas in Lunenburg County. The collection, which includes original photographs, copy prints, and postcards (real photos and halftones), depicts many different facets of the lives of the people of the Mahone Bay community: bands; buildings and street views; celebrations and events; cemeteries; churches; the First World War; the Masonic Lodge; people; photo albums; school photos; the Second World War; shipbuilding; street views; and town views. There are also a number of stereoviews (original photographs and printed halftones) that portray a wide variety of non-local subjects, including the operations of the T. Eaton Company, various Canadian views, the San Francisco Earthquake, the Russo-Japanese War, the Holy Land, and various scenes of rural life and domestic comedy, including the impact of the “New Woman.” MBMS-14

Collection primarily consists of ephemera relating to schools and education in the Municipality of the District of St. Mary's, including school newspapers from St. Mary's Rural High, Sherbrooke (ca. 1977-1982); St. Mary's Rural High history and memory books (1988 and 2003); and a St. Mary's Rural High Official Opening program (1953); report cards, school certificates, and an autograph book belonging to Margaret Carroll Sears, a student at Sherbrooke schools, which describe subjects taught and lists local teachers and students (ca. 1948-1960s). Also included are two miscellaneous ephemera items, the Schooner Song Book and a booklet for the Christening Ceremonies, CCGC Bickerton, Transport Canada Coast Guard. 2019.009

Collection consists of diverse records pertaining to schools and schooling within the Municipality of the District of St. Mary's, accumulated by the St. Mary's Genealogy Research Centre at Sherbrooke Village. Included are record books summarizing free school books issued to pupils within St. Mary's Municipal School Board sections including Caledonia, Upper Caledonia, Sherbrooke, Stillwater, and Port Hilford; school tax rolls; teachers agreements; school registers and attendance records; secretary record books; correspondence; meeting minutes; reports and periodicals; one book describing the boundaries of school sections within the Municipality of the District of St. Mary's; one Guysborough County District School Board Policy Manual (ca. 1980s). Some items are photocopies. Eastern Shore Archives school attendance registers collection

Collection consists of daily attendance registers from various schools along the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia, accumulated by the Easter Shore Archives. Records were created between 1891 and 1987, and in about 2003. Registers date from 1891 to 1987 and are usually identified by school name, section number, district or municipality, county, and school year. Some schools have a more complete range of records than others. Information recorded in the registers includes full name of student, date of birth, record of vaccination and inoculations, and name and address of parent or guardian. A variety of additional annual statistics and prescriptions are also included. Most of the registers are arranged by school name and chronologically within each school. Collection also includes a copy of a 1920-1921 register from the Sheet Harbour Road school, produced ca. 2003. The fonds contains records that demonstrate the academic activities of the staff and students of the Nova Scotia Teachers College, as well as some materials from the previous Nova Scotia Normal College. The series include: calendars, student directories, guide books, essays, examinations, commencement programs, convocation programs, banquet programs, “Teachers Views” newsletters, “Normal Bulletin” newsletters, while all other records are arranged in no particular order. Dominant record types include awards, certificates, Principal’s reports, addresses, and newspaper clippings, letters, newsletters, and records of the Alumni Association. The records provide information on some of the special events of the school, including Athletic Awards banquets, Honours banquets, convocation, commencement, Christmas concerts, Winter Carnival.
