Series forms part of the E.J. Webber fonds and consists of records related to Webber’s activities as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd Reserve Battalion Halifax Rifles during World War II. Series includes documents related to Webber’s training as an officer, as well as instructions on training others including booklets, manuals, memorandums, notes, an examination sheet, and other material. This includes copies of the Canadian Army Training Memorandum, which was a series of pamphlets published on a monthly basis from 1941 to 1945 which were intended to be distributed among all Canadian officers who were serving domestically. The memorandums featured articles and information on various aspects of military life and training. Series also includes issues of War and Current Affairs, a series of booklets issued by the British Army Bureau of Current Affairs; issues of Canadian Affairs, a series of booklets issued by the Canadian Wartime Information Board; and an issue of The Maple Leaf, a newspaper issued to Canadian soldiers. Also included in the series are forms and correspondence related to travelling expense claims for bus trips to Sheet Harbour for officer training classes and for trips to Musquodoboit Harbour and Ship Harbour to supervise training detachments. In addition, series includes a certificate authorizing Webber to be an official Royal Canadian Air Force Aircraft Detection Corps observer, an instruction sheet issued by a superior officer, forms, maps, a postcard, and other material. 2009.045

Series forms part of the Eastern Shore Archives map collection and consists of copies of topographical maps of Halifax County published by A. F. (Ambrose Finson) Church & Co. of Granville St., Halifax in 1865. The maps were produced from actual surveys drawn and engraved under the direction of H. F. Walling and bear certification indicating that they were entered according to law on the twenty-fourth day of March, 1864 by Ambrose F. Church, although they were not published until the following year. They also include plans of townships and directories for businesses in Halifax and various other localities, which identify prominent citizens and tradesmen. In addition, they include names of heads of households, statistics for vessels, population, education, religion, and acres of improved land as well as information on locations of ports of entry, post offices, telegraph stations and way offices. Leslie General Merchandise fonds and consists of loose pages from early account books as well as eighteen day books and three large ledger books documenting customer accounts and orders of goods. Some of the large ledger books contain loose receipts and order forms from suppliers and customers from various years. Also included are notes regarding the ledgers, some in correspondence with Robert Kim Stevens in 1998. The notes include personal background information on many of the people listed in the ledgers. Series is part of the Laura F. Stoddard family fonds and consists of three envelopes of quilt patterns and seven cards with instructions for various dance steps including the waltz quadrille, polka quadrille, first sett quadrilles, military polka, Saratoga lancers, lancers, and the Caledonia quadrille. Series also includes two watercolour paintings by H. Brownhill. Harold Brownhill of Halifax was registered at the Stoddard Hotel on August 25, 1946. Both paintings features landscapes and one shows the Clam Harbour Church with the original steeple. Series also includes a photograph of one of the paintings. Harold Brownhill was born in 1887 in Sheffield, England and married Eugenie Mason of Halifax on July 10, 1916. Harold worked as an accountant and they had five children: Donald Hugh, Eugenie, Hazel, Douglas Sydney, and Roberta Grace. Series also consists of one poem by Burns Marks of Ship Harbour entitled Good Hopes in Britain’s Pride. Burns ‘Austin’ Marks was born July 14, 1898 in Ship Harbour. His parents were Catherine Caroline Quinn and Martin Gay Black Marks of Ship Harbour. Burns Marks died July 14, 1964 in Halifax. He was known locally as a poet and wrote many other poems related to local history and residents. Series also consists of one brochure for Camp Charlotte, Ship Harbour Lake. The brochure asks interested visitors to book through a Miss Helen R. Saunders and Miss Annie G. Creighton, USA. Camp Charlotte was just an idea that never actually came to be, no camp was established. Accession number: 2013.010
