Archival description
File consists of photographs of the 128 foot long Douglas fir log being delivered on a barge at Digby, then floated into the water, up the beach, then loaded up a ramp onto three CPR flat-cars and transported to Halifax Shipyards. It arrived in Halifax on August 4, 1947. The log was presented to the City of Halifax by the Candian Pacific Railway, to use as a flagpole in front of City Hall in preparation for the city's bicentenary in 1949. The log was transported from British Columbia by the CPR via train and a scow across the Bay of Fundy, and erected by the Royal Canadian Engineers. Mayor A.E. Ahern and CPR officials officiated at the the unveiling of the new pole in September 1947. Newspaper coverage at the time indicated it was the longest log ever transported by rail. At 125 feet, it was thought to be the tallest flagpole in the British Commonwealth, but it was later determined that a flgstaff at Kew in London was taller. CR6-027
