Financial ledgers
Series · 1892-1895, 1919-1966
Part of Garth M. Hosking General Store fonds
Series forms part of Garth M. Hosking General Store fonds and consists of account books, day books, expense books, day book indexes, and other ledgers. Account books list the names of people who had credit at the store, their daily purchases and the frequency of their payments on account. Day books record daily sales at the store, and whether the sales were paid or put on account. Expense books record payments made to each supplier and a list of general expenses such as telephone, freight and postage. A summary list of annual expenses follows at the end of each year. The early expense books from the 1890s sketch out expenses and also serve partially as account books. Day book indexes record the names of individuals receiving credit and the corresponding page number in the account books. However, the indexes are not labelled or dated, so some appear not to correspond to account books in the fonds. The two ledgers record monthly expenses for the store from 1960-66. Some books record expenses for Hosking’s Garage. Accession number: 2003.011
Collection · 1981-1987
The Fisherman’s Life Museum is located in Oyster Pond and depicts the home and lifestyle of a local inshore fisherman in the early 1900s. It was originally the home of Ervine and Ethelda Myers and their family. It is part of the Nova Scotia Museum. The Fisherman’s Life Museum Oral History Project began in the summer of 1981 and was led by Deborah Trask. Interviews were conducted in July and August of that year and transcriptions were completed over the following six years. The primary motive for conducting the interviews was to gather information that would assist with interpretive program development for the new Fisherman's Life museum and to ensure the accuracy of the museum’s furnishings. The interviews were conducted with local residents who had substantial knowledge of the patterns of life in the area and would enable the museum to collect a wealth of oral history related to the Ervine Myers house, the museum outbuildings and site, patterns of land usage, work, and life in the community. Collection consists of transcripts and in some cases, audio cassette recordings of interviews with various residents of the Jeddore Oyster Pond area including Olive (Parker) Robbins, Percy Perry, Garth M. Hosking, Cecil F. Mitchell, and Jeannette A. (Mitchell) Hartlen. The interviews contain information regarding local history, the life of inshore fishermen in the area in the late 1800s to early 1900s, and information regarding the buildings and site that are now part of the Fisherman’s Life Museum. Collection also includes transcripts of the interviews. Accession number: 2013.064

Monthly time book
Item · 1942-1943
Item consists of a monthly time book that records the names of men and hours worked on a project from September to December 1942. It includes the names of at least sixty men who were working shifts of usually ten hours each day from Monday to Saturday. The name of the foreman given is Garth M. L. Hosking and the name B.H. Mitchell on the cover indicates that he was likely the contractor. The book also records the use of B.H. Mitchell's horse and truck, Reg Day's horse, and another company's truck. Although the nature of the project is not described, the men were probably working on constructing large floating barges to be used as part of the war effort during World War II. The barges were constructed locally at Hartlin Settlement and then carried by tugboat to Halifax Harbour. The main timbers used were imported, but the decking came from local mills, including Byron Mitchell's. Also recorded in the book are shifts worked by Garth Hosking during May and June 1943. Accession number 2010.003.
