Stewart Family fonds

Fonds is arranged in the following series: 1) Accounts Ledgers, 2) Voters and Voting, 3) Miscellaneous. Fonds consist of records relating to the business and farming activities of the Stewart family, predominantly Harry E. Stewart, owners and operators of Eleven Mile House located near the forks of the St. Mary's River in Melrose, Guysborough County. Eleven Mile House was an historic inn and coach stop from which the Stewart family also ran a store and offered postal services. The family also farmed. The house was called Eleven Mile House because it was located eleven miles from Sherbrooke on the Antigonish to Sherbrooke road. Fonds consist of the Stewart Family's business account ledgers that list the names of numerous Melrose and area residents and companies and goods and services purchased, payments made by either cash or in-kind labour, lodging and meals (ca. 1867-1934). Ledgers also describe work done by local community members for Harry E. Stewart at the house or on the farm or in the woods, as well as the family's seasonal farming activities. Fonds include voters lists and voting information for the provincial polling districts of Glenelg (no. 10) and Caledonia (no. 13) relating to Harry E. Stewart's role as reviser of voting lists, as well as Nova Scotia Franchise Act booklets and the Handbook for Liberal-Conservative Committeemen on Naturalization Assessment and Revision of the Voters' Lists (1907-1916). Fonds also include miscellaneous records relating to the Stewart family and Eleven Mile House including a telephone directory (1922), book of mails sent from Melrose post office (October 1872 to June 1876), and a school drawing belonging to Katie Stewart, daughter of Harry E. Sydenham Howe fonds

Fonds consists of a scrapbook compiled by Sydenham Howe, mostly documenting his family and his literary and artistic interests. Includes correspondence, predominantly written to and from Hon. Joseph Howe; printed and handwritten poems by Joseph Howe, Maria Morris, Mary Jane Katzman Lawson, and others; prints of engravings and lithographs, many of which depict women's fashions of the mid-19th century; newspaper clippings, several pertaining to poetry and curling; sketches and watercolours by artist Maria Morris as well as Mary Currie and S.J. Howe; visiting cards; autographs dated 1757 onwards; printed material and ephemera, including invitations, the Victoria School of Art and Design exhibibition of loans catalogue, 1887, and 1889 issue of Halifax Carnival, and three Notman photographs of John Howe and John and Mary (Currie) Ross. Thomas Rose operated a photography studio in Annapolis Royal from 1948 until 1973. The fonds consist of 619 photographs and approximately 2,000 negatives taken at this time. The images are of people, buildings, scenery and events in Annapolis Royal and area. 2002.1199
Fonds · 1968-1983
Fonds consists of the financial records of the trustees of Harbourside School of Owl's Head, Halifax County, Nova Scotia, including pages from a ledger book listing income and expenses of the trustees from January 1968 to June 1973. The ledger pages also list transactions of the trustees bank accounts from June 1977 to February 1983. Some transactions are also listed on sheets of loose leaf paper. Also included are two invoices addressed to the Harbourside School, one from Brookfield Foods and the other from the University of New Brunswick. In addition, there are two bank deposit slips and a calculator printout. Accession number 2009.042.

Fonds consists of records of the Union Church of Lake Charlotte, Halifax County, Nova Scotia and include account books and other financial records and minutes of meetings. Included is an original account book detailing the annual list of individuals who contributed to the church, along with the amount paid to the minister. Cash disbursements and cash received are logged at the back of the book. Fonds also contains reproductions of three books containing the meeting minutes of the church dating from the first meeting in 1896 up until 1987. The books also record financial accounts of the church from 1896 to 1994, including cash disbursements and cash received. Also included with the books are reproductions of receipts and sheets of paper recording subscriptions for repairs to the church building, accounts, and other information. Vincent Young fonds

Fonds consists of one audio cassette, featuring Vincent Young singing folk songs from the West Petpeswick area at a kitchen party in West Petpeswick. Songs include Rango’s Boots and The Bear Song. Rango’s Boots is about the very large boots worn by George William “Rango” Bayers while The Bear Song was from the late 1800s and referred to a bear that tormented livestock on the west side of Petpeswick Harbour. Also contains copies of transcripts of the lyrics of both songs including information about Rango Bayers. George William “Rango” Bayers was born in 1829 and died 1916 in West Petpeswick. His parents were Nutting Bayers and Marie (Warner) Bayers. He was married to Elizabeth Ann (Eliza) Clerge c. 1854. They had at least two children; Annie Belle (Annabel) Bayers (m. Dennis Aisley Greenough) and Henry William (Harry) Bayers (b. 1855). Rango was a large, distinguished looking man. He worked as a farmer and is thought to have owned a substantial amount of property, including several islands in Petpeswick Harbour and a gold or silver mine. His daughter, Annie Belle (Annabel) provided the lyrics and melody to the song, Farewell to Nova Scotia, to Helen Creighton who recorded it in 1933. The banjo player in the sound recording accompanying Vincent Young may have been Marshall Bayers. Accession number 2013.001
