Series forms part of the Katherine L. Stoddard fonds and consists of genealogical research and records pertaining to various Eastern Shore families. The families who feature most prominently are the Stoddards and Ritceys (Henrici), however, the Shellnut, Eisan, Anderson, Siteman, Gaetz (Gates), Newcomb, Bayers, Robson, MacEachern, Blaxland. Records appear primarily the result of research conducted by Katherine Stoddard, however, some records note that documents were copied by Annabel Siteman Ells and may have been intended for Katherine’s mother, Eva, who may also have conducted genealogical research. Series also includes an incomplete copy of A Brief History of the Stoddards of Halifax County written by Elsie Florence Stoddard. Records include information on many pioneer families on the Eastern Shore, including the families of Thomas Stoddard, Leonard and Martin Gaetz, and Henry Seidman (Seidemann) as well as information on the origins of the Ritcey family beginning with Johannis Christophorus Henrici. Records include handwritten information, copies of information from various sources including vital statistics and newspapers, and books in which Katherine Stoddard recorded information about her own family, one of which features a drawing of a map that shows various landowners around Clam Harbour and Owl’s Head. Part of Laura F. Stoddard family fonds
Series is part of the Laura F. Stoddard family fonds and consists of one business card for Pringle & London, suppliers of decorative leaded glass including ecclesiastical stained glass and memorial windows as well as importers of antique, cathedral and opal glass. They were located in Toronto and may have been employed by Judge Frederick Montye ‘Monty’ Morson (1853-1944) to supply a new window for the Clam Harbour United Church. Judge Morson stayed at the Stoddard Hotel in Clam Harbour every summer for thirty years and donated a memorial window to the church. Series also includes one black and white photograph of Judge Morson c. 1936. Accession number: 2013.010
Lake Charlotte Postmistress

Series forms part of the E. J. Webber fonds and consists of records relating to E. J. Webber and his wife Marguerite Lillias “Babe” Webber’s activities while sharing her duties as postmistress of Lake Charlotte, Halifax County, Nova Scotia. Series includes forms requesting the Lake Charlotte postmistress to deliver mail to rural mailboxes. Each form includes the date of the request, the name on the mail box, the location of the mail box, the names of other people who will use the box, and the post office currently serving the requestor. Although Marguerite held the official title of postmistress, forms are addressed either to E. J. Webber or simply to the Lake Charlotte Postmaster (the forms themselves use the generic term ‘Postmaster’ rather than ‘Postmistress’). The names of the post offices entered include Owls Head, Clam Harbour, Clam Bay, Lake Charlotte, DeBaies Cove, Lower Ship Harbour and Ship Harbour. Some of the forms have notes to the postmaster written on or attached to them.

Series forms part of Katherine L. Stoddard fonds and consists of three land deeds including one for land in Hantsport purchased from Charles Cowley Brown and his wife Emma by Robert J. Stoddard, Master Mariner, for six hundred dollars in 1924; one for land in Kings County purchased from George A. and Louise Yeaton by Robert J. Stoddard for one dollar in 1924; and one for land in Horton, King’s County, purchased by Robert J. Stoddard of Musquodoboit Harbour from John L. and Eunice E. Graham for three thousand six hundred dollars in 1923. Series also includes transcripts of a grant for five hundred acres to Thomas Stoddard dated September, 1784. Also includes typed transcripts of memorials written by Michael Eisan to the governor discussing a request for land in Jeddore and a later purchase of land in Ship Harbour c. 1786-1791 as well as another memorial dated 1796, wherein Eisan requests that he be granted permission to take possession of some back lands to attempt to raise grain in order to sustain his family, as he and his neighbors were having difficulty doing so on their current land in Ship Harbour; it being so close to the sea. Another transcript includes a deed for 200 acres on Lot. 20 purchased by Eisan from Joseph Lumb (or Lamb) for nine pounds in 1791. The transcripts also include a rejected petition made by Michael Eisan, Loyalist, for relief due to loss of property in South Carolina. The series also includes transcripts of the will of Thomas Stoddard of Clam Harbour dated 1813, bequeathing his land to his sons Walter Hercules, Thomas Ratchford, George William Sherlock, and Edmund Fanning. Michael Eisan (1730-1833) was the grandfather of Katherine Stoddard’s great grandmother Elizabeth Eisan. Accession number: 2013.008
Land indentures, maps, wills

Part of Helene Read fonds
Series forms part of the Helene Read fonds and consists of a land indenture dated August 8, 1799 in which possession of land in Clam Harbour is passed from Robert, Colin, and Patrick Campbell and their wives to Thomas Stoddard. Series also includes information concerning other land grants in Clam Harbour belonging to the Campbell and Stoddard families between 1765 to 1894 and 1945. Four maps are also included in the series and include plans dated 1956 showing the division of the estate of James Stoddard as per his will, a map of the lands of Ralph Stoddard dated 1970, and two maps showing the subdivision of Lot 1 lands owned by Douglas F. Stoddard dated 1963. In addition there is one map of the land belonging to Robert Sr., Duncan, and Robert Campbell as well as two pages of microfilm copies of the land grant document presumably for that piece of land c. 1760. All maps pertain to land in Clam Harbour. Series also contains copies of the wills of James Edward Stoddard, Thomas Stoddard, Adam Stoddard, Edmund Fanning Stoddard, and documents concerning the estate of Nancy Stoddard.
