Part of Helene Read fonds
Series forms part of the Helene Read fonds and consists of a land indenture dated August 8, 1799 in which possession of land in Clam Harbour is passed from Robert, Colin, and Patrick Campbell and their wives to Thomas Stoddard. Series also includes information concerning other land grants in Clam Harbour belonging to the Campbell and Stoddard families between 1765 to 1894 and 1945. Four maps are also included in the series and include plans dated 1956 showing the division of the estate of James Stoddard as per his will, a map of the lands of Ralph Stoddard dated 1970, and two maps showing the subdivision of Lot 1 lands owned by Douglas F. Stoddard dated 1963. In addition there is one map of the land belonging to Robert Sr., Duncan, and Robert Campbell as well as two pages of microfilm copies of the land grant document presumably for that piece of land c. 1760. All maps pertain to land in Clam Harbour. Series also contains copies of the wills of James Edward Stoddard, Thomas Stoddard, Adam Stoddard, Edmund Fanning Stoddard, and documents concerning the estate of Nancy Stoddard. Collection consists of forty monochrome aerial photographs of the Eastern Shore taken between 1931 and 1945. Also includes seven corresponding flight maps. Photographs illustrate the landscapes and coastlines of various locations along the Eastern Shore as they were in 1931-1945. Areas covered by the aerial photographs within this collection include Owl's Head, Little Harbour, Clam Harbour, Burnt Point, Clam Bay, Lake Charlotte, Ship Harbour, Upper Lakeville, Oyster Pond, and the Jeddores. Part of Laura F. Stoddard family fonds
Series is part of the Laura F. Stoddard family fonds and consists of three envelopes of quilt patterns and seven cards with instructions for various dance steps including the waltz quadrille, polka quadrille, first sett quadrilles, military polka, Saratoga lancers, lancers, and the Caledonia quadrille. Series also includes two watercolour paintings by H. Brownhill. Harold Brownhill of Halifax was registered at the Stoddard Hotel on August 25, 1946. Both paintings features landscapes and one shows the Clam Harbour Church with the original steeple. Series also includes a photograph of one of the paintings. Harold Brownhill was born in 1887 in Sheffield, England and married Eugenie Mason of Halifax on July 10, 1916. Harold worked as an accountant and they had five children: Donald Hugh, Eugenie, Hazel, Douglas Sydney, and Roberta Grace. Series also consists of one poem by Burns Marks of Ship Harbour entitled Good Hopes in Britain’s Pride. Burns ‘Austin’ Marks was born July 14, 1898 in Ship Harbour. His parents were Catherine Caroline Quinn and Martin Gay Black Marks of Ship Harbour. Burns Marks died July 14, 1964 in Halifax. He was known locally as a poet and wrote many other poems related to local history and residents. Series also consists of one brochure for Camp Charlotte, Ship Harbour Lake. The brochure asks interested visitors to book through a Miss Helen R. Saunders and Miss Annie G. Creighton, USA. Camp Charlotte was just an idea that never actually came to be, no camp was established. Accession number: 2013.010

Item consists of one book containing handwritten minutes of the Clam Harbour Ladies Sewing Circle recorded by secretary, Muriel Stevens from 1950 to 1952. Opening pages seem to suggest that the sewing circle was just being formed on March 15, 1950. Minutes record where the meetings were held, members in attendance, election of officials, plans for and outcomes of fundraisers, records of donations, and work done for the Church and Manse both by the Sewing Circle independently and in collaboration with other groups such as the Musquodoboit Harbour Ladies Aid Society. The book also contains an attendance list in the back that includes the names of all the Sewing Circle members. Accession number: 2013.034

Part of Wallace Russell fonds
Series consists of eight receipts belonging to Wallace Russell that include purchases made at Parker’s General Store in Owl’s Head and John M. Homans General Store in Clam Harbour between 1944 and 1953. Also includes three receipts for product (likely lobster) sold on account of Wallace Russell by Nickerson and Hyde Commission Merchants in Boston in 1944. Two of the latter receipts have letters written on the back from Maurice Nickerson to Wallace Russell regarding lobster sales. Series also includes one private receiving station license from the Department of Transport—Telecommunications Division for Wallace Russell dated 1951-1952. S1

Lake Charlotte Postmistress

Series forms part of the E. J. Webber fonds and consists of records relating to E. J. Webber and his wife Marguerite Lillias “Babe” Webber’s activities while sharing her duties as postmistress of Lake Charlotte, Halifax County, Nova Scotia. Series includes forms requesting the Lake Charlotte postmistress to deliver mail to rural mailboxes. Each form includes the date of the request, the name on the mail box, the location of the mail box, the names of other people who will use the box, and the post office currently serving the requestor. Although Marguerite held the official title of postmistress, forms are addressed either to E. J. Webber or simply to the Lake Charlotte Postmaster (the forms themselves use the generic term ‘Postmaster’ rather than ‘Postmistress’). The names of the post offices entered include Owls Head, Clam Harbour, Clam Bay, Lake Charlotte, DeBaies Cove, Lower Ship Harbour and Ship Harbour. Some of the forms have notes to the postmaster written on or attached to them.

Series forms part of the Annabel (Sitman) Ells fonds and consists of information from census records collected and copied by Annabel Ells as well as court papers. Documents include census abstracts for Ship Harbour, Shoal Bay, Little Harbour, Pope’s Harbour, Clam Harbour, Tangier, Owl’s Head, and Mushaboom as well as census records listing heads of families for Districts 26 and 27 including Pope’s Harbour, East Ship Harbour, Jeddore, Clam Harbour, and Little Harbour. Also included are notes on Electoral District 24-26 with voter lists. Court papers include abstracts from Supreme Court records as well as individual cases that include such family names as Abbott, Bean, Blakely (Blakeney), Curry, Den, Eisan, Lessee, Marks, Merryweather, Murphy, O’ Brien, Reardon, Rennels, Robson, Shellnutt, Silver, Siteman, Stoddard, Sutherland, Thorogood, Tucker, and Weaver (Webber). Series forms part of the Annabel (Siteman) Ells fonds and consists of correspondence regarding the establishment of a school at Ship Harbour, school trustee documents, school returns and registers for Ship Harbour school. Also includes correspondence from Clam Harbour school section, a memorial of the inhabitants of Egmont Harbour, Jeddore regarding the establishment of a school and church and aid to support a teacher. Also consists of school papers from Pictou County, particularly Toney River, and other school records gathered by Annabel Ells during the course of her research. In addition, series includes original high school certificates, teacher’s licenses and diplomas of Annabel Siteman as well as examination papers for various clerk positions. Accession number: 2013.066
