Fonds consists of financial records belonging to William Gaetz including insurance papers, receipts, correspondence, documents related to the estate of Josephine Gaetz, and military pension information. Also included are records related to Gaetz’s time spent serving in WWI, correspondence with soldiers during WWII, records related to Gaetz’s membership in the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and the Musquodoboit Harbour United Church for which Gaetz acted as treasurer. Church records include financial papers and correspondence, account books, receipts, religious education material, meeting minutes, photographs, insurance documents, and other material. Fonds also includes records pertaining to electoral districts and voters as Gaetz was one of the revisors of the voter lists for his district. At the beginning of the record, meetings are held frequently and focus on the establishment of a tennis club at Musquodoboit Harbour. Vincent Young fonds

Fonds consists of one audio cassette, featuring Vincent Young singing folk songs from the West Petpeswick area at a kitchen party in West Petpeswick. Songs include Rango’s Boots and The Bear Song. Rango’s Boots is about the very large boots worn by George William “Rango” Bayers while The Bear Song was from the late 1800s and referred to a bear that tormented livestock on the west side of Petpeswick Harbour. Also contains copies of transcripts of the lyrics of both songs including information about Rango Bayers. George William “Rango” Bayers was born in 1829 and died 1916 in West Petpeswick. His parents were Nutting Bayers and Marie (Warner) Bayers. He was married to Elizabeth Ann (Eliza) Clerge c. 1854. They had at least two children; Annie Belle (Annabel) Bayers (m. Dennis Aisley Greenough) and Henry William (Harry) Bayers (b. 1855). Rango was a large, distinguished looking man. He worked as a farmer and is thought to have owned a substantial amount of property, including several islands in Petpeswick Harbour and a gold or silver mine. His daughter, Annie Belle (Annabel) provided the lyrics and melody to the song, Farewell to Nova Scotia, to Helen Creighton who recorded it in 1933. The banjo player in the sound recording accompanying Vincent Young may have been Marshall Bayers. Accession number 2013.001

Records consist of land grants and indentures involving the Rennels, Blakney, Mitchell, and Myers families. Included is one 1857 land grant to William Rennels for one hundred acres in Jeddore. Also included are two 1902 indentures for land in Jeddore; one from Walter and Emma Rennels to John G. Mitchell and one from Isaac and Eunice Blakney to John Myers. William Rennels was employed as a merchant and married Maria Jennings, daughter of Joseph Jennings, in Halifax County, November 26, 1840. Walter John Rennels was the son of William and Maria. He was born May 4, 1859 in either Halifax County or Bayfield, NS. He married Emily E. Hartling, daughter of John and Charlotte Hartling, January 19, 1887 in Salmon River, where both were living at the time. Walter and Emily (Emma) had at least three children including Winifred J. (b. Jan. 28, 1890, d. Nov.5, 1944), Percy Karl (b. Dec. 11, 1898 in Halifax), and Cora Douglissa (b. Port Dufferin, m. Guy N. Stultz Aug. 4, 1919). On his marriage record, Walter Rennels’ occupation is listed as merchant in Salmon River, however on the birth, marriage, and death records of his children he is listed as a clerk in Halifax. He died June 23, 1936 and is buried in Camp Hill Cemetery. John George Mitchell was born c. 1842 and was the son of Captain David and Mary Frances (Webber) Mitchell. He worked as a lumberman in Jeddore. His first wife’s name was Eliza Anne Smith. He was widowed and married Mary Elizabeth “Bessie” (nee Mitchell) Mitchell (b.1864) of Jeddore on Jan. 20, 1894 in Dartmouth. They had one son, Byron Hadley (b. Sept. 12, 1894, d. Jun. 24, 1945). John G. Mitchell was the grandson of Colin Campbell Mitchell (b.1767). Isaac Day Blakeney was born c.1851, lived in Head of Jeddore, and worked as a labourer. His parents were Benjamin and Frances (Daye) Blakeney. He married Eunice Sophia Blakeney, daughter of Luke and Sarah A. (Doyle) Blakeney on June 10, 1882. Together Isaac and Eunice had eight children; Minnie, Herbert I., Alice F., Ralph S., Laura S., Ina E., and Raymond. Eunice Blakeney died March 20, 1926 and Isaac Blakeney died October 28, 1930 at Head of Jeddore where they are also buried. Accession number 2013.002

First folder includes a list of his family and descendants as well as the family and descendants of Charles Henry Webber (b. 1858, d. 1922). Second folder of photocopied material lists a more extensive genealogy of George Webber and his descendants. Genealogy was compiled by Jennie (Webber) Siteman. Accession number 2013.003

Item consists of one handwritten page, addressed “to whom it may concern” certifying that Simon Myers and B. Ann Shelnutt were married in Shoal Bay on the 4th of February, 1858. The document was written on December 10, 1858 by Rev. Robert B. Jamison at Ship Harbour and is witnessed by Neil Bollong, George Shelnutt, and Henry Shellnut. Accession number 2013.004

Consists of two handmade and handwritten books entitled, The Owlet and The Work of the Owl, which were created by the students of the Owl’s Head Harbour School. The Owlet was a magazine that the students created for exhibition in Halifax with the help of their teacher. Associated editors of The Owlet are listed as being Una Palmer, Reta Palmer, and Helen Parker. It features poems, horoscopes, essays, a school prophecy, jokes, drawings including the school and its floor plan, a list of pupils, and lists of improvements made to the school in the year 1932-1933. Some of the essays in this book relate to work and life in Owls Head and include an essay on sheep farming and the breed of sheep used. The Work of the Owl is a yearbook created by the students of the Owl’s Head Harbour School. It includes the school yell, school song, songs learned during year, animated map of Owl’s Head, poetry and prose about various topics, horoscopes, humor, and drawings. Accession number 2013.005
