Rug Hooking Guild of Nova Scotia fonds

Fonds consists of scrapbooks, which includes photographs, historical newspaper articles, and essays (1979-2002); photograph albums (1979-2002); meeting minutes, including financial and annual reports (1979-2010); records relating to educational programs put on by the guild, such as class lists and descriptions, and reports (1980-2008); photographs, video recordings, programs and correspondence from events and exhibits, (1989-2009); and heritage registry records, which consists of two paper versions and an electronic version. The first paper version has both originals and copies. The second version has certain originals, most of which are not found in the other paper version, though some can be found in the electronic version. The registry forms include the identity of the creator, when and where it was made, current owner, and photographs of the rugs. It is arranged by registry number (1996-2007). Also included are audio recordings of interviews with guild members (1992-1999); newsletters (1980-1990); video recordings of rug hooking and interviews (1990-1999); records relating to the history of the guild (1979-2009); and administrative records such as correspondence, regional maps and the guild’s constitution and by-laws (1979-2009). 2017-044
Charles E. Bryant

Fonds consists of personal diaries, notebooks, family photographs, a photograph album of ships, Halifax Harbour and Dockyard passes, and home movies. Charles Bryant kept daily diaries of his social activities in Halifax, with occasional references to business contacts, from 1908 to 1956, though not for every year. The notebooks document ships travelling through Halifax Harbour 1895-1920, giving dates of arrival, departure, and freight amounts for lobster and apples, supplemented by photographs of the ships taken during their visit. Album also includes images of ships and parts of the city damaged by the Halifax Explosion of 1917. The home movies show people relaxing at the beach, playing golf and baseball in Stanhope, Prince Edward Island, parts of a family wedding, and landscapes of the Cabot Trail, NS, Lunenburg, NS, and New York Harbor. The movies document the Bryant and Stairs family Christmas in Halifax and vacations in Stanhope, PE during the Second World War and in the 1950s. 2016-048

Fonds consists of business documents and political correspondence of the Annand family; and training and business records of Charles L. Cooley and the Cooley Brothers Jewelers Ltd, including 2 photographs of the store interior. Annand family business documents relate to the activities of Charles Annand and include his appointment as Queen’s Printer (1875), a petition for crown land (1885) and a 21-year lease on a gold mine at White Burn Gold District in Queens County, NS (1886). The political correspondence includes one letter to Charles Annand from the Office of Minister of Justice at Ottawa (1889) John Thompson discussing the progress of his contract regarding the railway; a letter to Charles from his father William Annand (1878) while in London, England as Canada’s agent general, commenting on Philip Carteret Hill’s chances of re-election in provincial election of 1878; 2 letters to Charles’ son Frederick W. Annand Sr. from Sir Charles Tupper (1908) who mentions Nova Scotians’ changed attitude to favour confederation and compliments Frederick’s grandfather William Annand; and a letter addressed to T.W. Annand, Dominion Immigration Agent in Halifax, from W.T.R. Preston, Commissioner of Emigration for Canada in London, United Kingdom (1904) discussing Lord Dundonald and the year’s increase in European immigration to Canada. The Cooley Brothers Jewelers records include the building specifications for new display windows (1919) and the bill for the work; an order for silverware and their design patterns from Williams (Birmingham) Ltd. in U.K. (1924); an Advertising Plan written by Mr. Brown of the Halifax Herald Ltd. (1953-1954); and 2 photographs of the store interior on Barrington Street, Halifax. Also includes two newspaper clippings about the business. Training documents relate to the President and co-founder Charles L. Cooley and include a character reference letter from his school in Dover, U.K. (1902); his apprenticeship indenture to Herbert James Darracott of Dover, U.K. (1903); a notebook of handwritten poems and proverbs for a happy life; a farewell message from former employer H.R. Bergman Company signed by all the employees (1914); and 2 photographs: one of Charles L. Cooley and one of a war memorial plaque from Queen Elizabeth II High School in Halifax, NS. The records document some of the business activities and political connections of the Annand family of Nova Scotia and the business activities of Charles L.
