The fonds consists of administrative papers, blueprints, business and personal correspondence, cable code books and other reference works, export orders and papers, financial documents, insurance papers, legal documents, packaging samples, photographs, plans, printed material, reports, and vessels papers. The material spans 176 years and illustrates a family company passed through two incarnations and through several generations of administration, along with its related off-shoots companies and associations. The material deals with late 19th and early 20 century shipping, as well as the 20th century business of packing and exporting salt fish. The fonds also contains papers of associated small companies including L.W. Vatcher Limited, and subsidiaries Acadia Fisheries and Smith Canneries, as well as papers from various investment dealings made by Fletcher S. Smith, including Parkdale Realty, Southern Realties, and Fenpark Realties, and agencies with which the Smiths were involved. Finally, the fonds includes various items from small companies including Dan Dauphiney Company Limited, Earle-Smith Partnership, Eastern Fisheries Limited, Fudge Shipping Company, Georgian Limited, Scotia Corporations, Sea Nymph Fisheries, and Smith/Romkey. These papers include correspondence, administrative documents, legal contracts and agreements, financial statements, journals and ledgers. The records of the fonds demonstrate the organizational structure, management, and operations of A.M. Smith and Company and related organizations, and provide insight into the business of salt fish, from fishing and processing to packing and exportation. Abbass Studios Ltd. fonds

Fonds represents over seven decades of photography by the owners and staff of Abbass Studios Ltd.. The studio operated a portrait studio, as well as accepted contracts from newspapers and covered local events. The photographs in the fonds reflect the diverse economic, political and cultural heritage of Cape Breton. The negatives are organized into seven series: A,B,C,D,N, DOSCO, and Portraiture (P). The N series includes the earliest images including the nitrate film negatives. The A,B,C, and D series continue chronologically until 2001 with the Portraiture ending in 2004. The DOSCO series includes photographs taken of the Dominion Steel and Coal Company during the 1950s.

Abraham Cuyler fonds

Fonds consists of a letter Abraham Cuyler wrote in 1784 from King Street, Soho to Lord Sydney. In that year there was a great influx of American Loyalists into Cape Breton Island, causing its separation as a province distinct from Nova Scotia. In 1784, the Town of Sydney was founded, capital of the Province, named after Lord Sydney, Secretary of State for the colonies. In this letter, Cuyler wrote entreating Lord Sydney to authorize and commence the settlement and give permission to superintend the people (from Quebec) until the Government of the Island of Cape Breton could be organized. He was also looking to be reimbursed and an appointment of services rendered. MG 2.25

Includes correspondence concerning his medical appointments, patients and their conditions, and cases of professional misconduct; letters and legal documents concerning Supreme Court cases, Hawkins v. Snow and Hawkins v. McNally. Also includes family correspondence between Hawkins and his sister Annabel (Hawkins) Brehaut, letters from siblings Giles and Ella, letters from Hawkins to his children, and letters to and from acquaintances; deeds and other legal records concerning Hawkins' property on Gottingen Street and the related court case; correspondence, report, and other items regarding Hawkins' activities as mayor, including a draft letter discussing the Halifax Explosion; medical examinations and certificates; receipts; newspaper clippings; notes; miscellaneous items relating to Hawkins' involvement in political party associations; and estate papers pertaining to Charles and Charlotte Hawkins. 1982-450
