Sydenham Howe fonds

Fonds consists of a scrapbook compiled by Sydenham Howe, mostly documenting his family and his literary and artistic interests. Includes correspondence, predominantly written to and from Hon. Joseph Howe; printed and handwritten poems by Joseph Howe, Maria Morris, Mary Jane Katzman Lawson, and others; prints of engravings and lithographs, many of which depict women's fashions of the mid-19th century; newspaper clippings, several pertaining to poetry and curling; sketches and watercolours by artist Maria Morris as well as Mary Currie and S.J. Howe; visiting cards; autographs dated 1757 onwards; printed material and ephemera, including invitations, the Victoria School of Art and Design exhibibition of loans catalogue, 1887, and 1889 issue of Halifax Carnival, and three Notman photographs of John Howe and John and Mary (Currie) Ross. Gavin L. Stairs Jr.

Consists of a bound volume containing carbon copies of typed letters and a diary written by Gavin L. Stairs, Jr. while with the 14th Royal Montreal Regiment, 1st Canadian Division, C.E.F., from 23 July 1914 to 2 September 1916. The letters are addressed to members of his family and describe Stairs's activities both during the period leading up to his departure for England (October 1914) and his experiences at the war front in Northern France. The last of his letters is dated 2 September 1916, a few days before his death. In total there are 108 letters, and at the end of the volume is a copy of Stairs's diary, in which he listed his activities from 1 January to 31 December 1915. 1994-360

Consists of materials created by the Commission to document its activities in the sports and recreation sector in Nova Scotia between 1983 and 1994. During this time the province hosted the 1987 Canada Winter Games at facilities centred in Cape Breton County and the Commission was heavily involved in the games from bids from across the province to host the games, to site selection of the venues once the host had been identified, to details on the management of the games and the achievements of Nova Scotia Athletes. While not the complete record of the games that might have been kept by the Winter Games committee the records do contain information on the composition of provincial teams and competition results. Also contains minutes of management and grant committee meetings of the Department of Culture, Recreation and Fitness between 1984 and 1989 and additional materials reflecting the participation of the Department or Commission on relevant national committees of allied and like organizations. 1995-007

John F. Rogers

Consists of black and white photographs that document the news stories Rogers was involved in either as shipping reporter, city editor or news reporter. Most depict ships of all kinds, e.g., tall sailing ships, steam ships and naval vessels, and ships in the port of Halifax. Also includes images of disasters such as damaged and torpedoed ships, and fires and floods in the Halifax area. Of significance are images of the Queen Hotel fire (1939), naval vessels returning troops to Halifax (1945), a view of St. Peter's Canal by W.R.MacAskill, new fire apparatus at a fire in the old historic properties area, Halifax, ca. 1920s, and a flood in Bedford near the train station, ca. 1950s. The photos were taken by various parties, some by Halifax Chronicle newspaper photographers Wilfred Doucette and Roy Tidman, a few by the Canadian military, and many by anonymous parties. Ellen Wainwright

Consists of two photograph albums compiled by Ellen (O'Brien) Wainwright, one containing photographs depicting scenes of Edgehill School for Girls, Windsor, including students, school activities and sports events (1916-1917). The other album depicts military personnel during World War I, celebrations including the Dominion Day parade (1918), house decorated for Armistice Day (1919), military camp at Fort Edward, Windsor (1918), sports and recreation at Edgehill, Windsor, and Evangeline Beach, Kings County, and other scenes in Hants County. Also includes a photograph of three soldiers, one of which is Evan Wainwright, of the 85th Battalion, Nova Scotia Highlanders. 1996-101
