Collection consists of copies of transcriptions of headstone inscriptions from various cemeteries across the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia. Records were created between about 1972 and about 2002. The transcriptions are handwritten, and most were created by genealogist Terrance Punch. Fonds also includes copies of cemetery records. Accession number 2003.010.

The first three series of the fonds consist of essays and research written and compiled by Mr. Patrick Milligan and Mr. D. Engram’s grade ten students at Eastern Shore District High School between 1973 and 1980 as part of a class project on local history. The essays include information about various aspects of the history of the Eastern Shore such as industries and occupations, activities, cemeteries, churches, individuals, houses, education, and family and community history. Selected essays from Mr. Milligan’s local history course, 1974-1975, were compiled into a school publication called The Shore Thing, a preliminary copy of which is included in the fonds. The purpose of the book was to introduce students to their own area and familiarize them with the history of local communities along the Eastern Shore. It was placed in the school library for the benefit of all students. The fonds also consists of yearbooks and a newspaper published by the school during the first ten years of its operation. Eastern Shore Archives school returns collection

Collection consists of copies of half-yearly returns of schools along the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia. The returns date from 1828 to 1839 and give information about the teachers and students at the schools, as well as giving a small amount of information about fee payments and the schools' general finances. Records were copied between about 1972 and about 2002. Accession number 2003.010.

Spry Bay store ledger and scrapbook

The item was originally a ledger from a store in Spry Bay c. 1896, in which accounts and retail transactions were recorded. The store may have been owned by the Leslie family. Later, around the time of the First World War, Bessie (Gerrard) Hilchey began using the ledger as a scrapbook and pasting newspaper clippings onto the pages, thereby covering most of the original ledger information. The scrapbook dates between about 1905 to 1953 and includes poems, newspaper articles, obituaries, marriage and engagement notices, graduation notices, clippings related to World War I and some small clippings about World War II, articles about horticulture, etiquette, single women and wives, bachelors and husbands, society columns, and articles about notable disasters or accidents including shipwrecks and fires. There are also handwritten notes mainly referring to the weather on the inside of the first page. These notes also record dates that buildings were constructed as well as the Halifax Explosion. Pages 195 to 285 have not been scrapbooked and remain purely accounts of retail transactions made at the store in Spry Bay, including the names of customers. Accession number: 2013.011
