Printed and bound account book for tracking tolls collected at Pigot’s Farm Gate, Hants County, along the Windsor to Halifax Road. John Fielden recorded the month, day and names of people travelling through the toll gate, the number and kinds of livestock accompanying them and how much they paid. The book is only partially filled and arranged in chronological order. The first entry is dated August 13, 1782 and the last entry is October 20, 1782. 2015-021

Fonds consists of records documenting personal and business activities of five generations of the Stairs family of Halifax, the majority of which were created and accumulated by Cyril W. Stairs and his son Arthur. Includes correspondence between family members, friends and business associates, legal and probate records, financial records, diaries, geneaological notes and charts, certificates, speeches, literary manuscripts, minutes and proceedings of business meetings, newspaper clippings, printed ephemera, and publications. Also included are photographs of family members, including 3 portraits of Helen and George Stairs, houses, offices and employees of Wm. Stairs Son and Morrow Limited, downtown Halifax, navy service, drawings depicting early Halifax buildings and street scenes, maps, architectural plans of the Stairs home on South Street, and architectural plans and sound recordings relating to the Wm. Stairs, Son and Morrow firm. Other family members represented in the fonds include: William Stairs, W. J. and Susan Stairs, Edward and Isabella Stairs, Edward Geoffrey Stairs, Kathleen Stairs, Gavin L. Stairs, Gilbert S. Stairs, Katherine (Drysdale) Stairs, Hugh M. Stairs, Herbert M. Item is a handwritten certificate awarding John Frederick Traugott Gschwind with an Order of Military Merit (Orden pour la Vertu Militaire) from the Hessian Army signed by Frantz Carl Erdman von Seitz. It is written in French and German, with a red wax seal attached. On the back is written “Discharge from the Hessian --?-- 1st June 1782”. Provides additional documentation on the presence of the Hessian Army in Halifax after the American Revolutionary War.

Also includes letters to colleagues and friends including Reverend John Brown, as well as a letter from Elizabeth Graham to her mother-in-law in Scotland. Consists of records documenting Robertson's activities as a researcher and writer in Shelburne from about 1960 until 1993. Contains primarily correspondence, research material, photographs, and other material relating to Shelburne County history, including the Loyalists, Port Roseway Associates, Ross-Thomson House, ships, and Shelburne County families. Also includes correspondence, research material, diaries, draft chapters, manuscripts, and other material relating to her various publications and research on topics including folklore, the Doane family and Doane Shipyard, the Mi'kmaq, and bird-watching. Also includes records relating to her husband Donald Robertson and the Shelburne County Historical Society, and watercolours of Shelburne scenes painted by Annie P. Bruce in 1893. Nancy Forrest

Consists of materials created or compiled by Nancy Forrest relating to the genealogies of the Duff, Fairbanks, Johnstone, Prescott, Thomas, and Forrest families in Nova Scotia. There is also information about her grandfather, Rev. John Forrest, who was the third President of Dalhousie University. The contents include family photographs, daguerrotypes and albums, originals and transcriptions of correspondence, scrapbooks, watercolours that are believed to have been created by Nancy Forrest's sister, some print items and two objects. There is also documentation relating to the CHNS radio station, a history of the School of the Deaf, as well as information about the Old Ladies' Home, Halifax, N.S.; Victoria General Hospital Nurses' Alumnae Association; I.O.D.E.; and the Registered Nurses' Association of Nova Scotia. Fonds consists of material documenting Violet Black's family, and her personal interests and activities from 1919 to 1991. Includes scrapbooks containing correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, and memorabilia relating to Violet Black and the Black, Marshall, and Eldridge families, the British royal family, the First and Second World Wars, and various local, national, and international events; diaries; posters pertaining to the First and Second World Wars and the Red Cross; a watercolour of William Marshall Black; and a map of Halifax in 1934. The fonds also includes postcards of Nova Scotia and abroad, and photographs depicting seaside scenes, yachts, ships, landscapes, and family excursions, in the Halifax area and King's County. Annapolis County Grand Jury

Fonds consists of two proceedings books in which the foreman recorded the actions of the jury in its administrative and judicial capacities. In 1800 legislation divided the county into an eastern district, which is present-day Annapolis County, and a western district, which is present-day Digby County, and in effect created separate grand juries for the two districts. Subsequent to the division, the proceedings books in this fonds cover only the actions ot the Grand Jury sitting at Annapolis, in the Eastern District. RG 34-301 volume P1; Microfilm 12146.
