Fonds consists of tracings and original drawings of property surveys and plot plans for the town of Windsor NS and nearby communities showing gypsum quarries, rail lines and landowners’ plots (1853-1938 and undated); original topographical survey drawings of the Avon and St. Croix Rivers showing low and high tide marks for Windsor-Hantsport-Summerville area (1940-1944); and blueprints and copies on linen of technical plans for barge ships including the DANIEL M. MUNRO, and the MUMFORD, as well as technical plans for a ship’s marine engine from Johnson Iron Co. Ltd. of Yarmouth (1919-1942). Companies represented include Wentworth Gypsum Co., Newport Plaster Mining and Manufacturing Co., the Canadian Gypsum Co., and its parent the United States Gypsum Co. Fonds also includes a 1922 map of the world showing trade routes between Canadian and Foreign ports published by the Canadian Department of the Interior (1922); black & white photographic copies of geology maps of Avondale, Hantsport, Miller Creek, St. Croix, Upper Falmouth, and Windsor (1948); and undated topographical maps of Windsor area quarries. The material documents the mining management activities of Canadian Gypsum Company and its parent United States Gypsum Co. as they created topographical survey plans of their quarries and other assets for mining gypsum rock; studied water levels and ships’ drafts to calculate their loading capacities; and built or retrofitted ships to transport the rock to the United States and elsewhere.

Fonds consists of black and white video recordings produced by individuals. Topics include documentaries on unions, unemployment, daycare (especially St. Joseph’s Day Care Centre in Halifax), and environmental concerns including a debate between Elizabeth May and John Dickie on the Spruce Budworm. The Halifax Shipyards, National Sea Products, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) hearings on Pay TV Services, and the Killam Library at Dalhousie University are recorded as well as community events such as NS High School Drama Festival of 1974, the Baddeck Community Planning meeting 1975, and the Festival Acadien in 1978. Videos also include demonstrations of video and sound production techniques, Donald Johnston of Lincolnville NS performing his own music, women’s sexual assault stories, and education practices for hearing and visually impaired children, among others. Also included in the fonds are shot lists for some productions, the Video Theatre Catalog of video titles in their collection (1974-1976), and a written brief submitted by the Association to the CRTC objecting to the introduction of Pay TV.

A.G. Jones

Fonds consists of records created and accumulated by Jones in the course of his political activities, including typescripts of correspondence to and from leading Nova Scotian politicians, printed copies of resolutions and petitions, and newspaper clippings relating to the anti-Confederation movement in Nova Scotia and elections, 1864-1882; letter book kept while Jones was minister of militia and defence, 1878; thirty-six letters written to Jones from Hon. Alexander MacKenzie, prime minister, mostly of a private political nature, 1869-1885; speeches, including one made as Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, 1902; and military commissions. Also contains a file of personal correspondence, newspaper clippings, legal documents, and ephemera, most of which pertains to the Jones family and genealogy, 1846 onwards.
Robert Blackwood

Fonds consists of a daybook with church-related entries compiled by Rev. Blackwood, recording baptisms, deaths, and marriages, as well as daily events and business transactions. The contents of the fonds include information about sick people who were visited, and information about the Blackwood family, including the sailing of David and William Blackwood from Wallace, Nova Scotia to Hull, England. There are also documents relating to William MacPherson, who was the builder of the first railway passenger car in Canada.
J. Murray Beck

Consists of records and research notes documenting Beck’s career as a political scientist and historian. It includes research notes and materials, draft manuscripts and typescripts, and reprints of articles by Beck on the main topics for which he became famous: Nova Scotia elections, Canadian elections, the Nova Scotia government and Joseph Howe. It also includes Beck’s research and writing on the history of Lunenburg, and its politically active citizens; speeches and papers given at conferences; correspondence from publishers and colleagues; university degrees and records from his teaching career; journals, notebooks; and discharge papers from Beck’s World War II service overseas, some material relating to his family and volunteer work, and a few photographs. Dr. Beck’s research method was to copy sources by hand or by photocopier, write a preliminary analysis and file them by general subject for later use and re-use in his writings. The records reflect Beck’s arrangement and file titles, especially the research files.
