Dennis Garland 'Bud' Malloy hailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia. He joined the RCAF on the day World War II began and completed over 60 missions with 402 Squadron before being repatriated to Canada in October 1943. Later, he served as a Flight Commander and instructor. By July 1964, he had risen to the rank of Group Captain and Station Commander at RCAF Goose Bay. Malloy had prior flying experience as a civilian. After graduating from JATP and CFS, he was assigned as the second instructor at SFTS Uplands. In 1942, he was posted to the UK, where he took over 402 Squadron. He was shot down over the Channel but was rescued by a launch. F/L Malloy's logbook contains detailed records of his flying activity during World War II, including his involvement in the Dieppe Raid, notes on missing comrades, weather conditions, and escorting Flying Fortress aircraft on bombing missions. Additionally, there is a picture of a Spitfire aircraft in his logbook. SAM.2002.32.1a

Lt. (P) Hilliard was a naval aviator with the Royal Canadian navy. Lt (P) Hilliard began his flight training at RCAF Station Centralia, Ontario on August 4, 1949, on Harvard and Expeditor aircraft. On May 3, Lt (P) Hilliard was transferred to RCAF Station Trenton, Ontario, to complete his training on the Harvard and Expeditor. On July 24, 1950, Lt (P) Hilliard was transferred to Operational Flying School 1 Lassiemouth in Moray, North-East Scotland, where he was trained on Firefly aircraft. On October 27, 1950, he was transferred to Operational Flying School 2 - 737 Squadron Eglington, Toronto, Ontario, where he finished his training on Fireflies. On February 8, 1951, Lt. (P) Hilliard was posted to 825 Squadron, 19 Support Air Group Shearwater, Nova Scotia, where he mostly flew Harvard, Firefly, and Avenger, Tracker, and HTL-6 Sioux Helicopters. During his time in HMCS Shearwater, Lt (P) Hilliard served at 825/880 Squadron, VU-32 Squadron, and also spent time flying aboard H.M.C.S. Magnificent. SAM.2005.115.1a

Lieutenant Morris served in several different locations and positions throughout his military career. In 1943, he served at RAF Goderich for #12 Elementary Flying Training School and later at RAF Kingston for #31 Service Flying Training School. In 1944, he served in H.M.S. Macaw, H.M.S. Daedalus for 798 RN Squadron, H.M.S. Blackcap, and H.M.S. Wagtail for 772 RN Squadron in FRU Course. On July 14th, 1944, he was awarded wings. In 1945, he served in H.M.S. Drake for Aero Engine Course at RNEC Devonport and in H.M.S. Kestrel for Area Engine and Air Armament at RNAS Worthy Down. He also served in RNAS Rattray for H.M.S. Merganser for 708 Squadron (Barracuda) as Air Engineer Instructor and Flight Test Duties. In 1946, he served in H.M.S. Heron for 700 RN Squadron for Test Pilot Course and in HMCS Stadacona for RCN Barracks Halifax for RCN Air Section (Dartmouth) for Duty as Test Pilot and Air Engineering Officer. In 1947, he continued his duty in No.1 Training Air Group at HMCS Stadacona. In 1949, he served in HMCS Bytown for Duty With Assistant Chief of Naval Technical Services (Air) and HMCS Ontario. He was appointed as a Lieutenant-Commander (E) (A/E) (P) RCN with seniority dated 01/04/1950. He continued his duty in HMCS Bytown for Staff of Assistant Chief of Naval Technical Services (Air) and in HMCS Shearwater as Officer-in-Charge Avenger Prototype Project Team. In 1951, he served in HMCS Shearwater as Officer-in-Charge RCN Aircraft Project Team and as Assistant Air Test and Liaison Officer. He served in HMCS Shearwater and HMCS Magnificent for Staff of 30th Carrier Air Group as Air Engineer Officer in 1952. In 1953, he was promoted to Commander (E) (A/E) (P) RCN. He continued his service in HMCS Niagara on Staff of Naval Member of Canadian Joint Staff (Washington) as Staff Officer and as Staff Officer (Air Engineering) and as Staff Officer (Engineering). In 1956, he served in HMCS Shearwater For Duty With School of Naval Aircraft Maintenance as Officer-in-Charge and as Air Engineer Officer. In 1960, he served in HMCS Bytown on Staff of Engineer-in-Chief as Director of Air Engineering, and in 1961, he served on the Staff of Director General Aircraft as Director of Aircraft Maintenance. Throughout his career, he flew a variety of different aircraft, from the Tiger Moth to the Tracker. He also had his flying clothing and equipment record book, photos of the Tiger Moth and Harvard aircraft, and his flying assessments in his logbook. SAM.2006.37.1

Sergeant Levitin was a navigator with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He began his training at #5 Air Observer School in Winnipeg, Manitoba on February 5th, 1941, and completed it on May 27th, 1941. Then, he went to #4 Bomber and Gunnery School in Fingal, Ontario for his Air Observer Training, which he completed on May 27th, 1941. On June 8th, 1941, he reported to #1 Air Navigation School in Rivers, Manitoba for advanced training on the Avro Anson, which he completed on July 7th, 1941. On July 20th, 1941, he reported for duty at his first posting at 116 Bomber Squadron at RCNAS Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Sergeant Levitin flew on Catalina and Ventura aircraft, doing transport and submarine patrols as a navigator. In April 1943, he was promoted to Flight Lieutenant and transferred to #4 Operational Training Unit in Alness, Scotland. On March 8th, 1943, he was sent to the Royal Air Force 222 Group in Ceylon. Flight Lieutenant Nathan Levitin, a navigator from Ottawa, arrived in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in December 1943 as the only RCAF crewman of a Catalina. No. 222 Group was a group of the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. It was formed on September 1st, 1941, based in Ceylon, and had squadrons stationed around the Indian Ocean. The group undertook long-range bombing and mine-laying operations that took them as far as Sumatra and Singapore. The group was disbanded on October 15th, 1945, becoming Air Headquarters Ceylon (AHQ Ceylon). Sergeant Levitin reported for duty at #413 Photo Squadron in Rockcliffe, Ontario, on April 25th, 1947. He flew on Ansons, Mitchells, Norsemen, and Canso aircraft until October 3rd, 1949, at which time Flight Lieutenant Levitin was posted to #4 Staff Navigation Instructor/Navigator school in Summerside, PEI, and then transferred to #2 Air Navigation School in Summerside, flying on Dakotas until July 30th, 1953 SAM.2014.0024.001

Lieutenant Langman was appointed as a Naval Airman 2/c RNVR on September 16th, 1940. He underwent training in H.M.S. St. Vincent for the #19 Pilot Course in 1940, followed by training in Collins Bay Aerodrome (Kingston ON) for the #31 Service Flying Training School in 1941. In 1942, he served in H.M.S. Grebe for 775 and 815 Squadrons. The following year, he served in H.M.S. Shah for 851 Squadron as Senior Pilot. He then served in H.M.S. Daedalus for 703 Squadron (Naval Air Sea Warfare Development Unit) as Senior Pilot in 1945.Victor Langman was inspired to fly airplanes himself when Alan Cobham brought his flying circus to Chingford and enjoyed a circuit.Langman was educated at Brighton College, where he enjoyed rugby and diving and volunteered for the Fleet Air Arm, joining HMS St Vincent as a Naval Airman 2nd Class in June 1940.Langman was a slow learner and it was 12 hours and 25 minutes before he was allowed his first solo flight in a Miles Magister.In the Spring of 1941 he undertook further training at Kingston, Ontario in the Fairey Battle.After courses and several sea passages, Langman flew as a passenger in a KLM Junkers 52 from Lagos to Cairo to join the Fleet Air Arm squadrons based at Dekheila, five miles west of Alexandria.At first Langman was disappointed to be appointed to 775 Naval Air Squadron employed on communications duties, but he quickly familiarised himself with the Middle East flying several aircraft types and experiencing a variety of emergencies. After flying with 815, Langman spent more time in the USA, learning fly the Grumman Avenger and joined 851 Naval Air Squadron flying from the escort carrier Shah in on operations in the Indian Ocean.Throughout Lieutenant Langman's career, he flew numerous aircraft including the Fairey Barracuda, Avro Anson, Miles M-14 Magister, Fairey Battle, Fairey Swordfish, Fairey Albacore, Junker, Short Stirling, Blackburn B-25 ROC, DE Havilland DH82B Queen Bee, Gloster Gladiator, Fairey Fulmar, and the TBM Turpon. During the first five years of his flying career, he served in multiple theaters of war, including Egypt and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). SAM.2019.0105.002

He began his career as a Naval Cadet in the Royal Canadian Navy. He served in Royal Roads (RCNC) as a Cadet Captain. He became a Midshipman RCN with seniority dated 05/07/1945. He underwent training with the Royal Navy in 1945. He was then appointed as an A/Sub-Lieutenant RCN with seniority dated 03/11/1947, and later as a Sub-Lieutenant RCN with the same seniority date. He was promoted to Lieutenant (P) RCN with seniority dated 20/05/1949. He also underwent training at H.M.S. Excellent for the RN Long Gunnery Course in 1954 and served in HMCS Shearwater for Gunnery Duties in 1956. He became a Lieutenant-Commander (P) (G) RCN with seniority dated 20/05/1957 and served in HMCS Bonaventure for VS-880 Squadron in 1959. He also served in HMCS Saskatchewan and HMCS Oriole, where he was in command from 1967-69. He was later released from service. The logbook contains information about the aircraft flown, operations and exercises carried out, flight duration, flight totals, certifications earned, bombing scores of damaged or destroyed targets, locational data, as well as details about the pilot, co-pilot, and passengers. It also includes a breakdown of the types of aircraft flown between 1939-42, distinguishing between bombers and fighters. Additionally, it provides records of flying assessments and yearly totals for 1941, along with an Aiming Point Photo taken during an attack on a V-1 flying bomb at Criel-Sur-Mer in France in July 1944. Bill was appointed as an Ordinary Seaman (Officer Candidate) with the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve (RCNVR) in 1943, and in 1944, he was appointed as an A/Probationary Sub-Lieutenant (Temp.) with the RCNVR. He served in HMCS Kings (Officer Training Establishment) in 1944 and was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant (Temp.) with the RCNVR in 1945. In the same year, he served in H.M.S. St. Vincent for training and then in RNAS Rattray for #85 Observer Course. He also served in HMCS Warrior for 825 Squadron in 1946. In 1946, he was appointed as a Lieutenant (O) (Temp.) with the RCNVR and then transferred to the RCN through Short Service Appointment commencing 10/08/1946. In 1948, he was appointed as a Lieutenant (O) (SSA) with the RCN, serving in Magificent for 19 Carrier Air Group as an Observer in 825 Squadron. He served in HMCS Stadacona for Maritime Warfare School as a Naval Air member of Staff and in USS Palau for ASW Training. During the Korean War, he served in HMCS Iroquois in 1953. He was appointed as a Lieutenant-Commander with the RCN in 1954 and served in HMCS Cornwallis for Instructional Duties. He also served in HMCS Lanark in temporary command in 1958 and in HMCS Stadacona as First Lieutenant-Commander in 1963. In 1967, he retired from service. Bill was a colourful aviator who trained on Fairey Barracudas and Fairey Swordfish biplanes in Scotland at the end of WWII. He was posted to Canada's first aircraft carrier, HMCS Warrior, from where he flew Fairey Firefly fighter-bombers. Later, he flew from Canada's second carrier, HMCS Magnificent. During the Korean War, he served aboard the destroyer Iroquois. After retiring from the Navy, he worked as an administrator at Moirs and then at the local hospital before returning to aviation. He flew light twins for several years from Kelly Lake airport, performing duties such as ambulance flights and beach landing on Sable Island. Later, he flew Beaver aircraft into remote strips of Labrador and Newfoundland. When the company he worked for folded, he resumed work as an instructor at the Shearwater Flying Club. He took part in the annual Spruce Budworm spraying operations in New Brunswick, flying Grumman Avenger aircraft until an engine failure caused him to crash into the bush, demolishing all of the aircraft. However, he emerged unscathed from the cockpit. Bill was an ardent advocate for naval aviation and served as an editor for the Shearwater Aviation Museum's periodical. He also spearheaded a battle to preserve the Shearwater airport. A proud Canadian and a true patriot, Bill spent his final years attempting to persuade government authorities to re-equip our navy with a carrier-based task force to take part in UN and NATO operations. In his last days, he took on the cause of Omar Kadr and lent his talented pen in defence of national and international issues. SAM2009.0018.001

This logbook belonged to L.A.C. Fields and documents his flying time with 423 Squadron. Most of the entries detail his flights on Anson and Sunderland planes. The logbook also includes his certification for the Pilot's badge, a flight assessment from 1942, a copy of a speech by Dwight D. Pilot Officer J. Donegani commenced flight training at No. 13 Elementary Flight Training School (E.F.T.S.) in St. Eugene, Ontario from November 14, 1943, to January 4, 1944. He then proceeded to No. 31 Service Flying Training School (S.F.T.S.) in Kingston, Ontario. Following this, P/O Donegani attended the Naval Air Instrument Flying School, Hinstock (N.A.I.F.S) and then moved on to No. 9 Advanced Flying Unit RAF Errol, near the village of Errol in Perth & Kinross, Scotland. Subsequently, P/O Donegani was posted to 717 Squadron at HMS Owl, which housed the Royal Navy’s Barracuda Operational Training Unit, No. 1 Barracuda Servicing Unit, No. 3 Barracuda Servicing Unit, and No. 1 Avenger Servicing Unit. He was then transferred to 769 Squadron at Royal Naval Air Station East Haven (RNAS East Haven, also known as HMS Peewit), a former Royal Navy, Fleet Air Arm station, located 3 miles (5 km) southwest of Arbroath, Angus, Scotland. This facility was specifically built as an airfield for a Deck Landing Training school. Donegani then proceeded to No. 1 Naval Air Gunners School (NAGS) in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. From there, he was stationed at HMS Goshawk, a Royal Naval Air Station in Trinidad, British West Indies. SAM.1998.87.6
