Series forms part of the Annabel (Sitman) Ells fonds and consists of information from census records collected and copied by Annabel Ells as well as court papers. Documents include census abstracts for Ship Harbour, Shoal Bay, Little Harbour, Pope’s Harbour, Clam Harbour, Tangier, Owl’s Head, and Mushaboom as well as census records listing heads of families for Districts 26 and 27 including Pope’s Harbour, East Ship Harbour, Jeddore, Clam Harbour, and Little Harbour. Also included are notes on Electoral District 24-26 with voter lists. Court papers include abstracts from Supreme Court records as well as individual cases that include such family names as Abbott, Bean, Blakely (Blakeney), Curry, Den, Eisan, Lessee, Marks, Merryweather, Murphy, O’ Brien, Reardon, Rennels, Robson, Shellnutt, Silver, Siteman, Stoddard, Sutherland, Thorogood, Tucker, and Weaver (Webber). Part of Eastern Shore District High School fonds
Series forms part of the Eastern Shore District High School fonds and consists of essays written by students pertaining to the history of different areas along the Eastern Shore. Areas included are Bayers Settlement, Chezzetcook, Clam Harbour, Gaetz Brook, Jeddore, Lake Charlotte, Upper Lakeville, Lake Echo, Little Harbour, Musquodoboit Harbour, Ostrea Lake, Petpeswick, Porters Lake, and Ship Harbour. The essays feature topics such as occupations, industries, sports, electricity, tools, education, transportation, census information, the early mail run, the general history of the area and its inhabitants as well as changes that have occurred over the years. Included in the series is the draft of the publication, The Shore Thing, which was a compilation of selected essays from the grade ten local history projects in 1974 to 1975. In addition to the essays, the publication contains jokes, recipes, puzzles and stories. There is also a photocopied picture of ice houses in Lake Banook and a photocopied article about the vessel, Fleur de Lis.

Part of Grace (Williams) Forsythe fonds
Series forms part of the Grace (Williams) Forsythe fonds and consists of the minute book of the West Jeddore School trustees from 1944 to 1959, scripts of pageants that may have been performed in schools, and a periodical entitled The Canadian Red Cross Junior, Vol. XXIII, No. 10 dated 1944, which reflects Grace Forsythe’s involvement with the Red Cross Society and her efforts to establish Junior Red Cross Societies in her schools. Series also contains three books created by Grace’s students including a scrapbook of clippings of famous people created by a grade seven class in 1953, a book of stories and drawings entitled Our Story Book created by students in 1961, and a book of stories of rescue created by grade six students in 1962. Also included is a book of lesson plans written by Grace in summer school in Truro in 1942 and an article containing the autobiographical account of Dr. G. G. Sedgewick entitled, A Secret Chapter in the History of Education, which recounts the trials of a new teacher in Oyster Pond in 1900. In addition, series contains a typed copy of Grace Forsythe’s memoirs of her teaching career together with a scrapbook of photographs of students from 1932-1957, illustrating her story, and two certificates recording her completion of grades nine and ten which also list subjects studied and grades received. Stoddard, Funeral Director, for Sun Life Assurance Co. and receipts, including Victory Bond, tax, and doctor receipts. One receipt from J. S. Manchester, M. D. has a letter written on the back to the doctor from Harris Blakeney regarding an error in the doctor’s bill.

Series forms part of Katherine L. Stoddard fonds and consists of three land deeds including one for land in Hantsport purchased from Charles Cowley Brown and his wife Emma by Robert J. Stoddard, Master Mariner, for six hundred dollars in 1924; one for land in Kings County purchased from George A. and Louise Yeaton by Robert J. Stoddard for one dollar in 1924; and one for land in Horton, King’s County, purchased by Robert J. Stoddard of Musquodoboit Harbour from John L. and Eunice E. Graham for three thousand six hundred dollars in 1923. Series also includes transcripts of a grant for five hundred acres to Thomas Stoddard dated September, 1784. Also includes typed transcripts of memorials written by Michael Eisan to the governor discussing a request for land in Jeddore and a later purchase of land in Ship Harbour c. 1786-1791 as well as another memorial dated 1796, wherein Eisan requests that he be granted permission to take possession of some back lands to attempt to raise grain in order to sustain his family, as he and his neighbors were having difficulty doing so on their current land in Ship Harbour; it being so close to the sea. Another transcript includes a deed for 200 acres on Lot. 20 purchased by Eisan from Joseph Lumb (or Lamb) for nine pounds in 1791. The transcripts also include a rejected petition made by Michael Eisan, Loyalist, for relief due to loss of property in South Carolina. The series also includes transcripts of the will of Thomas Stoddard of Clam Harbour dated 1813, bequeathing his land to his sons Walter Hercules, Thomas Ratchford, George William Sherlock, and Edmund Fanning. Michael Eisan (1730-1833) was the grandfather of Katherine Stoddard’s great grandmother Elizabeth Eisan. Accession number: 2013.008

Series forms part of the Grace (Williams) Forsythe fonds and consists of locally produced publications related to the history of communities on the Eastern Shore. Included in the series are two publications on the history of St. James Church and Jeddore, commemorating the 130th and 150th anniversaries of the St. James congregation, dated 1963 and 1983 respectively. Also included is the revised 1979 edition of a publication written by David E. Stephens, entitled the Story of the Musquodoboit Railway. Series also contains an article written by Margaret Davis entitled, Historical Society answers questions, which discusses how Grace Forsythe and Helen Jennex of the Marine Historical Society helped to answer the question of how Ava and Evangeline Kent passed away in the late1800s. The question was posed after the author discovered their graves in a forgotten graveyard in Pleasant Point. The article also discusses the resources offered by the Society and the publications that they issue. Series also contains a handwritten, one page history of the Red Cross Society in Jeddore. Also included are the histories of Jeddore businesses written by students, c. late 1940s. Businesses mentioned include Nathanial Dooks’ grocery store, the Jeddore post office, B. O. Myers grocery store, and Ralph Bonn’s blacksmith shop. Accession number: 2010.032

Series forms part of the Grace (Williams) Forsythe fonds and consists of photographs and copies of photographs of people, buildings, and scenes along the Eastern Shore. Included are photographs of Salmon River Bridge in the 1930s and 1960s, Byron Myers’ store and post office and Nat Dooks’ store at Head of Jeddore, fish stores owned by Mr. Jim and Captain Will Harpell (grandfather of Grace), the ship Hans Leonhardt which was on her maiden voyage from Germany to Jeddore in September of 1938 and in port during the Czecho-Slovakian crisis, HMCS Sackville in 1944, Jeddore Harbour in winter, several photographs of unidentified people, the United Church at Head of Jeddore, St. George’s Church in Ostrea Lake, the Baptist Church in Oyster Pond, and Reverend Robert Jamieson. Also included are copies of a photograph of Harpell’s Cove showing the home of Jeremiah and Emma Harpell c. 1920, a general view of West Jeddore, and several postcards featuring scenes of Ostrea Lake and Jeddore as well as two negatives including one of Ostrea Lake School, and a clipped picture of the T.S.S.
