The fonds consists of records accumulated by Annabel (Siteman) Ells during the course of her research on the area of Ship Harbour and the families who lived there as well as personal records created and accumulated throughout her lifetime. The fonds includes a wide variety of records such as land related documents, wills, Loyalist petitions, census information, court papers, church registers and vital statistics including marriage, birth, and death records; school papers, genealogies, clippings and notes taken from various newspapers and periodicals, photographs and negatives, correspondence, postcards, and diaries. Series forms part of the Annabel (Sitman) Ells fonds and consists of information from census records collected and copied by Annabel Ells as well as court papers. Documents include census abstracts for Ship Harbour, Shoal Bay, Little Harbour, Pope’s Harbour, Clam Harbour, Tangier, Owl’s Head, and Mushaboom as well as census records listing heads of families for Districts 26 and 27 including Pope’s Harbour, East Ship Harbour, Jeddore, Clam Harbour, and Little Harbour. Also included are notes on Electoral District 24-26 with voter lists. Court papers include abstracts from Supreme Court records as well as individual cases that include such family names as Abbott, Bean, Blakely (Blakeney), Curry, Den, Eisan, Lessee, Marks, Merryweather, Murphy, O’ Brien, Reardon, Rennels, Robson, Shellnutt, Silver, Siteman, Stoddard, Sutherland, Thorogood, Tucker, and Weaver (Webber). Series forms part of the Eastern Shore District High School fonds and consists of essays written by students pertaining to the history of different areas along the Eastern Shore. Areas included are Bayers Settlement, Chezzetcook, Clam Harbour, Gaetz Brook, Jeddore, Lake Charlotte, Upper Lakeville, Lake Echo, Little Harbour, Musquodoboit Harbour, Ostrea Lake, Petpeswick, Porters Lake, and Ship Harbour. The essays feature topics such as occupations, industries, sports, electricity, tools, education, transportation, census information, the early mail run, the general history of the area and its inhabitants as well as changes that have occurred over the years. Included in the series is the draft of the publication, The Shore Thing, which was a compilation of selected essays from the grade ten local history projects in 1974 to 1975. In addition to the essays, the publication contains jokes, recipes, puzzles and stories. There is also a photocopied picture of ice houses in Lake Banook and a photocopied article about the vessel, Fleur de Lis.

Sub-series forms part of history and heritage activities series of the Helen Jennex fonds and consists of records relating to research undertaken by Helen Jennex and possibly others into local history and events in the Eastern Shore. Sub-series contains two booklets, one describing the history of the Clam Harbour Church and one, written by Jennex, describing the history of the West Jeddore School. East Jeddore School fonds

Fonds consists of records of the East Jeddore School and consists of a ledger which records school taxes owed by individual taxpayers for the period of 1930-1936, along with their payment status. Also recorded are teacher salaries, supply costs, insurance fees, and other expenses for the same period. In addition, the ledger book includes minutes of school meetings from 1923-1935. Also includes a sheet of paper which records valuations of taxpayers’ property in East Jeddore and school taxes for 1921. Accession number 2009.039

Collection consists of copies and transcriptions of records from various churches and parishes that were located on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia or which were used by Eastern Shore residents. The collection contains baptismal, marriage, burial, and confirmation records along with other church records, dating from 1752 to 1982. Some records are on microfilm or have been copied from microfilm, while others are typed or handwritten transcriptions of records. 2003.010, 2004.008, 2011.024

The first three series of the fonds consist of essays and research written and compiled by Mr. Patrick Milligan and Mr. D. Engram’s grade ten students at Eastern Shore District High School between 1973 and 1980 as part of a class project on local history. The essays include information about various aspects of the history of the Eastern Shore such as industries and occupations, activities, cemeteries, churches, individuals, houses, education, and family and community history. Selected essays from Mr. Milligan’s local history course, 1974-1975, were compiled into a school publication called The Shore Thing, a preliminary copy of which is included in the fonds. The purpose of the book was to introduce students to their own area and familiarize them with the history of local communities along the Eastern Shore. It was placed in the school library for the benefit of all students. The fonds also consists of yearbooks and a newspaper published by the school during the first ten years of its operation. Part of Grace (Williams) Forsythe fonds
Series forms part of the Grace (Williams) Forsythe fonds and consists of the minute book of the West Jeddore School trustees from 1944 to 1959, scripts of pageants that may have been performed in schools, and a periodical entitled The Canadian Red Cross Junior, Vol. XXIII, No. 10 dated 1944, which reflects Grace Forsythe’s involvement with the Red Cross Society and her efforts to establish Junior Red Cross Societies in her schools. Series also contains three books created by Grace’s students including a scrapbook of clippings of famous people created by a grade seven class in 1953, a book of stories and drawings entitled Our Story Book created by students in 1961, and a book of stories of rescue created by grade six students in 1962. Also included is a book of lesson plans written by Grace in summer school in Truro in 1942 and an article containing the autobiographical account of Dr. G. G. Sedgewick entitled, A Secret Chapter in the History of Education, which recounts the trials of a new teacher in Oyster Pond in 1900. In addition, series contains a typed copy of Grace Forsythe’s memoirs of her teaching career together with a scrapbook of photographs of students from 1932-1957, illustrating her story, and two certificates recording her completion of grades nine and ten which also list subjects studied and grades received.
