Series forms part of Association for Preservation of the Eastern Shore fonds and consists of records related to the Association’s involvement in the opposition to the federal and provincial governments’ proposal for a Ship Harbour National Park. Most of the Association’s activities from its formation around October 1972 until late 1973 were related to this opposition. Series contains correspondence, meeting minutes, briefs, reports, clippings, notes, newsletters, notices, memorandums, and other material. Series also includes petitions opposing the National Park which were circulated by members of the Committee to Prevent the Proposed Park in October 1972. In addition, series includes a copy of a petition opposing the National Park which was circulated by Aubrey Siteman in 1969.
Research material
Series forms part of Association for Preservation of the Eastern Shore fonds and consists of records which are not directly related to Association activities, and generally not created by Association members, but which pertain to topics of interest to the Association. Series includes correspondence, publications, speech notes, a film transcript, Senate debates, bills, and proceedings, additional material related to Byways and Special Places, a variety of research on National Parks and other background information. Series also includes material, mainly clippings, related to the conflict surrounding expropriation of land at Kouchibouguac National Park in New Brunswick. In addition, series contains a comprehensive study of District 18, Halifax County in 1972 conducted by local residents following Hurricane Beth which caused damage to the pulp mill in Sheet Harbour, resulting in the need to establish a new industry in the area. The goal of the study was to determine what industries were feasible for the area with the resources that were available.

Series forms part of Association for Preservation of the Eastern Shore fonds and consists of records related to the Association’s activities after the abandonment of the Ship Harbour National Park proposal in late 1973. After this time, the Association shifted its focus to monitoring, advocating and lobbying government officials on a number of issues of concern to Eastern Shore residents. Among these were environmental issues, including pesticide spraying and illegal dumping; safety and law enforcement issues, including speeding and unsafe driving on and around Clam Harbour Beach; and the promotion of local residents’ interests, including concerns about the hiring practices of the Nova Scotia Job Corps programme. The National Park proposal’s provincial successor, the Eastern Shore Seaside Park System, was also of concern to the Association, and it spent some energy advocating for local involvement in its planning (including supporting the Park’s Citizen’s Representative Committee), and later lobbying for the Park’s speedy completion. Series contains correspondence, meeting minutes, notes, clippings, newsletters, reports, briefs, resolutions, articles, membership lists, membership cards, petitions, posters, and other material. Series includes a 1980 government publication about the Eastern Shore Seaside Park System.

Series includes correspondence between P. H. Weary and Jean MacLean, director of the Red Cross outpost hospitals, discussing the planning of the hospital and correspondence of Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital Inc. That file also includes a list of members of the board of trustees from 1984 and other contact information. Series also includes miscellaneous correspondence with Merrill C. Matthews and S. R. Series forms part of Laura F. Stoddard family fonds and consists of eleven postcards, a Christmas card, and several notes to Hannah, Walter, and Laura Stoddard from various correspondents and from all over the world including Italy, the United States, and Britain. Series also contains ten letters to Walter and Hannah Stoddard from Reverend James Anderson including nine prayer cards. In addition there are two military Christmas cards from 1918 to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Stoddard including one from a Private Duncan near [Brussels] and one from France from N. Webber of the Canadian Forestry Corps, 70th Co. Overseas. There is also one letter to Mrs. Hannah Stoddard from the Imperial War Graves Commission dated 1923 concerning the erection of a headstone, correspondence to Hannah Stoddard from the Treasury Department, Bureau of War Risk Insurance concerning the life insurance of Frank Cecil Stoddard who was enlisted in the US army; and a wreath order form and card sent to Mrs. W. E. Stoddard from the War Graves Commission. Series also includes a number of birth and wedding announcements as well as a letter to Walter Stoddard from his brother Dr. T. A. Stoddard discussing the purchase of land to establish a muskrat, mink, and fox fur farm. There is also a booklet on raising muskrats, which is referenced in the letter. Accession number: 2013.010

Series is part of the Laura F. Stoddard family fonds and consists of three ledgers containing general records of registered mail for 1894-1903, 1904, and 1914-1919. Series also consists of two notes from William Condon of the Egg Island Light c.1897 to Walter Stoddard, Postmaster at Clam Harbour, concerning registered mail as well as one note from another sender dated May 1895. These notes were originally located in the registered letters journal for the post office. Series also includes one certificate of post office registration for a letter addressed to Parker Archibald, and two Post Office Department notices to the postmaster at Clam Harbour concerning his salary as well as three envelopes.
