Lt. Nicols was appointed as a Naval Cadet (SSA) for the Royal Canadian Navy on September 12, 1954. He served in the Officer Training Establishment of HMCS Venture for training in 1954. Later, he was appointed as a Midshipman (SSA) for the RCN on September 1, 1956. In this role, he served in HMCS Niagara for pilot training with plate number 1. He also received flight training in USNAS Pensacola, NAAS Saufley Field, NAAS Corry Field, and USNAS Kingsville TX in 1956. He was then appointed as an A/Sub-Lieutenant (SSA) for the RCN on September 1, 1957, and was awarded wings on May 29, 1958. On March 1, 1958, he was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant (P) (SSA) for the RCN. He served in various squadrons, including VU-32 Squadron, HU-21 Squadron, and HS-50 Squadron while stationed at HMCS Shearwater and HMCS Bonaventure. He was promoted to Lieutenant (P) (SSA) for the RCN on October 1, 1960, and served as the Operations Watchkeeper and Flight Crew Briefer in HMCS Bonaventure in 1962. In the years that followed, he served in various roles in different locations, including Watchkeeping Training in HMCS Annapolis in 1964, Navigating Officer and Air Officer in HMCS Annapolis in 1965, and Helicopter Refresher Course in HMCS Shearwater for HU-21 Squadron in 1966. He also served in HMCS Bonaventure for HS-50 Squadron, HMCS Nipigon for HS-50 Squadron, and HMCS St. Laurent for HS-50 Squadron. In 1969, he served in CFB Shearwater for Aircrew Division as Ground Training Officer, and in 1972, he served as Base Personnel Services Officer in the same location. He served in CFB Portage La Prairie for VT-406 Squadron in 1974. Later that year, he served in HS-443 Squadron in CFB Shearwater and in HMCS Protecteur, HMCS Preserver, and HMCS Athabaskan for HS-443 Squadron Air Detachment. In 1977, he served in CFB Shearwater for HT-406 Squadron as Course Control and Administration Officer. Finally, he served in CFB Shearwater Base Operations as Operations Duty Officer in 1983, before retiring on February 19, 1994. Throughout his service, Lt. Nicols flew various aircraft and helicopters, including the Fleet 80 Canuck, C-45 Beechcraft Expeditor, Bell HTL-6 Sioux Helicopter, H04S-3 Horse Helicopter, CH-124 Sea King Helicopter, CH-136 Kiowa Helicopter, and the Grumman Tracker. His logbooks contained a nominal roll list, qualification sheets, aircraft codes, records of flying time, and a helicopter training certificate. SAM.2005.121.43h

Sub-Lieutenant Kieser, E.A. served in HMCS Discovery for UBC UNTD from 1948 to 1951. He also served in HMCS Naden for Summer Training in 1949. Later, he served in HMCS Shearwater for Observer Training in 1951. He was appointed as an A/Sub-Lieutenant RCN(R) with seniority dated 01/05/1952. He was released after a short service appointment on 18/11/1952. He was then appointed as an A/Sub-Lieutenant (O) (SSA) RCN with seniority dated 25/07/1952. He went to RNAS Lee-on-Solent, England for Observer Training in 1952. He also served in RNAS St. Merryn, England for Navigation Training in the same year and was awarded Observer Wings on 25/07/1952. He was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant (O) (SSA) RCN with seniority dated 25/07/1952. He served in RNAS Eglinton, Ireland for Anti-Submarine Training in 1952. He was part of the 31st Support Air Group for 880 Squadron in HMCS Shearwater. He also served in HMCS Shearwater and HMCS Magnificent for 881 Squadron in 1953. He attended the Maritime Warfare Course in HMCS Stadacona, Halifax in 1953. He was appointed as a Lieutenant (O) (SSA) RCN with seniority dated 25/07/1954. Flying Officer James J.S. began his flight training in April 1943 at #313 Ferry Training Unit in North Bay, Ontario, on the Tiger Moth aircraft. He was then transferred to #13 Elementary Flying Training School in St. Eugene, Ontario, in July 1943 for flight training on Fleet Finch aircraft. In September 1943, F/O James was transferred to #5 Service Flying Training School in Brantford, Ontario, to train on the Avro Anson. In February 1944, he was transferred to #45 Transport Group RAF Ferry Command at Dorval, Quebec, where he flew B-25 Mitchell and Liberator aircraft. F/O James flew the B-25 Mitchell on exercises to various locations, such as the Azores (Portugal), Rabat-sale-kanitra Morocco, Cairo (Egypt), Karachi (Pakistan), Habaniya (Iraq), Lagens (Portugal), and Castel Benito (an airport of Tripoli created by the Italians in Italian Libya in the early 1930s, called RAF Castel Benito by the Allies after 1943). In August 1944, F/O James was posted to #313 Ferry Training Unit in North Bay, Ontario, for training on the Hudson aircraft and further training on the B-25 Mitchell. In April 1944, F/O James flew the C47 Douglas Dakota to Biskra (Algeria), Foggia (Italy), and various locations in England and Canada. In February 1945, F/O James was with #45 Transport Group RAFTC in Dorval, Quebec, flying C-47 Douglas Dakotas to various locations in the Middle East. F/O James' last entry in his logbook was on March 25, 1945, and his next entry is on October 28, 1955, to the 23rd of April 1955, where he was training on the Fairchild PT-26A Cornell, Avro Canada CF-100 Canuck, and DC-10s. F/O James was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force. F/O James's logbook also contains copies of flying orders, flying test results, and his yearly flying assessments. SAM.2013.0045.003

Bill was appointed as an Ordinary Seaman (Officer Candidate) with the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve (RCNVR) in 1943, and in 1944, he was appointed as an A/Probationary Sub-Lieutenant (Temp.) with the RCNVR. He served in HMCS Kings (Officer Training Establishment) in 1944 and was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant (Temp.) with the RCNVR in 1945. In the same year, he served in H.M.S. St. Vincent for training and then in RNAS Rattray for #85 Observer Course. He also served in HMCS Warrior for 825 Squadron in 1946. In 1946, he was appointed as a Lieutenant (O) (Temp.) with the RCNVR and then transferred to the RCN through Short Service Appointment commencing 10/08/1946. In 1948, he was appointed as a Lieutenant (O) (SSA) with the RCN, serving in Magificent for 19 Carrier Air Group as an Observer in 825 Squadron. He served in HMCS Stadacona for Maritime Warfare School as a Naval Air member of Staff and in USS Palau for ASW Training. During the Korean War, he served in HMCS Iroquois in 1953. He was appointed as a Lieutenant-Commander with the RCN in 1954 and served in HMCS Cornwallis for Instructional Duties. He also served in HMCS Lanark in temporary command in 1958 and in HMCS Stadacona as First Lieutenant-Commander in 1963. In 1967, he retired from service. Bill was a colourful aviator who trained on Fairey Barracudas and Fairey Swordfish biplanes in Scotland at the end of WWII. He was posted to Canada's first aircraft carrier, HMCS Warrior, from where he flew Fairey Firefly fighter-bombers. Later, he flew from Canada's second carrier, HMCS Magnificent. During the Korean War, he served aboard the destroyer Iroquois. After retiring from the Navy, he worked as an administrator at Moirs and then at the local hospital before returning to aviation. He flew light twins for several years from Kelly Lake airport, performing duties such as ambulance flights and beach landing on Sable Island. Later, he flew Beaver aircraft into remote strips of Labrador and Newfoundland. When the company he worked for folded, he resumed work as an instructor at the Shearwater Flying Club. He took part in the annual Spruce Budworm spraying operations in New Brunswick, flying Grumman Avenger aircraft until an engine failure caused him to crash into the bush, demolishing all of the aircraft. However, he emerged unscathed from the cockpit. Bill was an ardent advocate for naval aviation and served as an editor for the Shearwater Aviation Museum's periodical. He also spearheaded a battle to preserve the Shearwater airport. A proud Canadian and a true patriot, Bill spent his final years attempting to persuade government authorities to re-equip our navy with a carrier-based task force to take part in UN and NATO operations. In his last days, he took on the cause of Omar Kadr and lent his talented pen in defence of national and international issues. SAM2009.0018.001

Donald John Sheppard was born on 21 January 1924 in Toronto. After graduating, he joined the RNVR Fleet Air Arm and started Pilot Course 38 at HMCS St. Vincent in May 1942. He was then selected for pilot training with the US Navy and was winged in the summer of 1943. He was posted to 1835 Squadron in October but it was disbanded in December. He was then transferred to 1836 Squadron, part of the 47 Naval Fighter Wing, and they boarded HMS Victorious in March 1944. Donald was involved in the first successful attack on the Tirpitz on 3 April. Around this time, he transferred to the RCNVR (on paper). Victorious left for the Indian Ocean in June 1944 and was involved in several attacks on Sumatran oil refineries in December 1944 and January 1945. It was here where he made his first claims and was awarded his DSC in March 1945. Victorious then headed East to join the British Pacific Fleet and operated with the US Navy during the invasion of Okinawa. Here he claimed his last victory. Donald was sent on leave to Canada when the fleet returned to Australia. He saw no further combat as the war was drawing to a close. After the war, he transferred to the RCN and was promoted to Commander in 1958. He was CO of the Escort Destroyer HMCS Fraser in the early '60s and retired in January 1974 after serving at NATO HQ.Don Sheppard served in the Navy, and afterwards, he farmed in Nova Scotia and Ontario between 1974 and 1984. He was one of the sixteen Fleet Air Arm pilots from World War II who achieved five or more air victories, which earned him the title of an 'ace'. Sadly, he passed away on May 2, 2018.Don Sheppard's logbook contains handwritten notes about his missions during World War II and his comrades who never made it back. SAM.2017.0019.103

Lt. (P) Hilliard was a naval aviator with the Royal Canadian navy. Lt (P) Hilliard began his flight training at RCAF Station Centralia, Ontario on August 4, 1949, on Harvard and Expeditor aircraft. On May 3, Lt (P) Hilliard was transferred to RCAF Station Trenton, Ontario, to complete his training on the Harvard and Expeditor. On July 24, 1950, Lt (P) Hilliard was transferred to Operational Flying School 1 Lassiemouth in Moray, North-East Scotland, where he was trained on Firefly aircraft. On October 27, 1950, he was transferred to Operational Flying School 2 - 737 Squadron Eglington, Toronto, Ontario, where he finished his training on Fireflies. On February 8, 1951, Lt. (P) Hilliard was posted to 825 Squadron, 19 Support Air Group Shearwater, Nova Scotia, where he mostly flew Harvard, Firefly, and Avenger, Tracker, and HTL-6 Sioux Helicopters. During his time in HMCS Shearwater, Lt (P) Hilliard served at 825/880 Squadron, VU-32 Squadron, and also spent time flying aboard H.M.C.S. Magnificent. SAM.2005.115.1a

Lieutenant Morris served in several different locations and positions throughout his military career. In 1943, he served at RAF Goderich for #12 Elementary Flying Training School and later at RAF Kingston for #31 Service Flying Training School. In 1944, he served in H.M.S. Macaw, H.M.S. Daedalus for 798 RN Squadron, H.M.S. Blackcap, and H.M.S. Wagtail for 772 RN Squadron in FRU Course. On July 14th, 1944, he was awarded wings. In 1945, he served in H.M.S. Drake for Aero Engine Course at RNEC Devonport and in H.M.S. Kestrel for Area Engine and Air Armament at RNAS Worthy Down. He also served in RNAS Rattray for H.M.S. Merganser for 708 Squadron (Barracuda) as Air Engineer Instructor and Flight Test Duties. In 1946, he served in H.M.S. Heron for 700 RN Squadron for Test Pilot Course and in HMCS Stadacona for RCN Barracks Halifax for RCN Air Section (Dartmouth) for Duty as Test Pilot and Air Engineering Officer. In 1947, he continued his duty in No.1 Training Air Group at HMCS Stadacona. In 1949, he served in HMCS Bytown for Duty With Assistant Chief of Naval Technical Services (Air) and HMCS Ontario. He was appointed as a Lieutenant-Commander (E) (A/E) (P) RCN with seniority dated 01/04/1950. He continued his duty in HMCS Bytown for Staff of Assistant Chief of Naval Technical Services (Air) and in HMCS Shearwater as Officer-in-Charge Avenger Prototype Project Team. In 1951, he served in HMCS Shearwater as Officer-in-Charge RCN Aircraft Project Team and as Assistant Air Test and Liaison Officer. He served in HMCS Shearwater and HMCS Magnificent for Staff of 30th Carrier Air Group as Air Engineer Officer in 1952. In 1953, he was promoted to Commander (E) (A/E) (P) RCN. He continued his service in HMCS Niagara on Staff of Naval Member of Canadian Joint Staff (Washington) as Staff Officer and as Staff Officer (Air Engineering) and as Staff Officer (Engineering). In 1956, he served in HMCS Shearwater For Duty With School of Naval Aircraft Maintenance as Officer-in-Charge and as Air Engineer Officer. In 1960, he served in HMCS Bytown on Staff of Engineer-in-Chief as Director of Air Engineering, and in 1961, he served on the Staff of Director General Aircraft as Director of Aircraft Maintenance. Throughout his career, he flew a variety of different aircraft, from the Tiger Moth to the Tracker. He also had his flying clothing and equipment record book, photos of the Tiger Moth and Harvard aircraft, and his flying assessments in his logbook. SAM.2006.37.1

Leading Aircraftman (LAC) William George Scott, also known as Billy, was originally from Glace Bay, Cape Breton. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) as a pilot and underwent training on Tiger Moth, Harvard, and Anson aircraft from September 1942 to October 1944. Geoffrey T. Sayre, also known as LAC Sayre, was born on June 12, 1916, in Saint John, NB. During World War II, he fought for his country as an Air Force Pilot from 1939 to 1945. After the war, he worked at F.E. Sayre Ltd. and Pollett River Lumber Co., which were owned by his family. Later on, he dedicated his life to the town of Rothesay, where he served as the first volunteer firefighter. He helped in forming the Rothesay Fire Department and eventually retired as its chief. He also served as Councilor and Mayor of Rothesay and created the Rothesay Regional Police Force.LAC Sayre's Pilot's Flying Log Book documents his service with #3 EFTS in London, Ontario, #113 Bomber Sqn in Yarmouth, NS, and #31 General Reconnaissance School in PEI. He flew Hudson's, Anson's, Harvard's, and Yale's from July 1941 to December 1942.LAC Sayre's Logbook also contains his flying assessments, RCAF application for enlistment, and his discharge certificate. This logbook contains a paper contract inside the cover, appendices, a blank certification sheet, a completed certification for systems knowledge and flying maneuvers, a hand-drawn portrait, and an insert detailing standard entries. There is also an insert for a flying assessment on page 24, and an index card-sized insert that provides notes on Wellington Parachute Drills. A record of service is included on the back cover. The logbook records flight maneuvers, training, exercises, pilot names, type of aircraft, day and night flights, type and model number of aircraft flown, and transfers to different schools and locations. It also keeps track of flight time totals from each location. The information related to maneuvers performed and other flight information is recorded numerically. The insert provided details of standard entries, which can be used to read the information. SAM. 2019.0074.001
