Includes journals, correspondence, reports, and lists of historical manuscripts relating to the records commission of Nova Scotia; essays, notes, and correspondence on the early history of Halifax and Nova Scotia; extracts of original letters, biographies, personal correspondence and diary; obituaries; books relating to British North America; photographs of Akins and his house in Falmouth, built in 1863, and a photograph album he assembled in 1869 entitled, "Persons connected with the Dominion of Canada." Fonds also contains typed excerpts from the newspaper Liverpool Advance which includes mention of vessels and privateers in Liverpool between 1810 and 1904 and general news between 1886 and 1912. Fonds consists of records mostly relating to Cantley's business activities with the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Co., including letter books and loose correspondence, some personal, 1903-1911; Bluenose Gold Mining company letter book, 1899-1913; legal and financial records, some concerning the consolidation of the British Empire Steel Corporation Limited (BESCO); correspondence, press clippings, reports and other items regarding the Canadian Shell Committee and the Canadian Northern Railway; newspaper clippings and articles pertaining to Cantley and the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Co.; photocopy of his journal and notes on his trips to Europe, 1908, 1909, 1913, 1915, 1916, 1919; some speeches and articles written by Cantley and other miscellaneous items; and bound scrapbooks, one containing ca. sixty photographs, plans, and descriptions of company operations and facilities. Fonds consists of a journal entitled "Journal of a Whaling Voyage made by the Barque Rose of Halifax, that sailed the 15th January 1843, Bound to the Pacific for Sperm Whales - Thomas T. Wood, Master, and Returned". In three volumes, Creighton's journal recounts his daily activities as a seaman, such as coopering, sewing clothes and mending sails, duty watch, dealing with customs duties, his experiences ashore, whaling and preparing oil for shipment, as well as weather reports, geographical locations, strange star sightings and other topics of nineteenth century navigational interest. At the end of the third volume, the journal includes a list of vessels encountered during the trip, entitled "a Memo of Ship's Spoken during the Voyage" which includes the date of event, name of vessel, name of master, where it was from, length of time at sea, amount of oil and geographical location.
