Petition of Michael Eisan
Item · 1785
Item consists of printed microfilm copies of a petition written by Michael Eisan to the Hon. Thomas [Dundas], received December 29, 1785. The document includes a signed oath stating that Eisan resided at Halifax/ Dartmouth from July 15, 1783 to March 25th, 1784, however, that he was incapable of delivering any request for relief, outlining the claims and losses that he had incurred in South Carolina during the American Revolution, within the allotted amount of time for claims submissions. His reason for not submitting his claim to the Commissioners on time was that he was unable to procure any evidence to substantiate his claims or prove his losses and he believed that there was no point in submitting a relief request without any such evidence. The document also includes government responses to his petition, regarding the events that took place during the dissentions in America and the actions of the Loyalists. Accession number: 2013.015

Fonds consists of a bound diary in two sections. The first section was writen from 7 January 1778 to September 1779 while Houston was in New York. It recounts details of the weather, arrivals and departures of ships, troop movements, and various battles of the American rebels and their French allies against the British during the Revolutionary War. The second section of the diary was written in Shelburne, Nova Scotia and covers the period from 18 March to 30 May 1788. It details the weather, crop plantings and failures, ice conditions, hauling seaweed, dealing with the black flies, work around the house and other daily events. It is not certain that both portions of the diary were written by Alexander Houston because of differences in the handwriting. MG 1 volume 483C

The collection includes cartographic drawings - mostly small published informational maps of the campus showing building locations - and some textual records relating to construction of the buildings, such as contracts, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and published articles relating to the University architects and buildings. There are gaps in the collection, as there have never been regular deposits of architectural records in the Archives. UKC.ARCH
