John Daniel Logan fonds

Fonds contains music manuscripts and published scores, photographs, and autograph letters written by well-known composers such as Jacques Offenbach, Giuseppe Verdi, and John Philip Sousa. Through his work as a music critic and journalist in Toronto and Halifax, Logan communicated with many prominent Canadian musicians in the early twentieth century. Many of the scores, photographs, and autographs included in this collection are a result of his contributions to music criticism. The music and theatre programs are frequently annotated with comments for reviews, and most of his correspondence with musicians and actors relates to his work as a music and theatre critic. Some of the scores were given to Logan as gifts from performers while others were sent to him for review or publication in newspapers. There are several manuscripts of songs by Edith Jessie Archibald, a prominent social activist and suffragist in Halifax. Letters sent to Logan also concern his poetic contributions, and there is a manuscript draft of one of his books, Preludes: Sonnets and other Verses (1906). MS-5-1

S/Lt Garth Bremner was a member of the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve and was attached to the RCAF for flight training. His logbook contains comprehensive notes on aircraft, courses, test results, specialized flying training for navy pilots, exercises, and newspaper articles.S/Lt Bremner began his training at #14 Elementary flying training school in Elmdon, West Midlands, England, flying Tiger Moths. In July 1942, he was transferred to 32 S.F.T.S in Kingston, Ontario, for training on Harvard and Harvard II aircraft. Starting in January 1943, S/Lt Bremner trained on Oxford and Sparrow aircraft at the Royal Naval Air Station Danibristle, located East of Fife, Scotland. In February, he was moved to #1 Naval air Gunnery school in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, where he trained on Swordfish and stayed after training to fly Swordfish aircraft until February 1945.In March 1945, S/Lt Bremner was transferred to the Royal Naval Air Station Trinidad, also called NAS Trinidad, NAS Port-of-Spain, which was a large United States Navy naval base built during World War II to support the many naval ships fighting and patrolling the Battle of the Atlantic. S/Lt Bremner flew Grumman Goose, Reliant, Anson1, and Dakota Aircraft on flights to Puerto Rico, Nassau, Baltimore, New York, and New Zealand.The Swordfish HS-469, flown by S/Lt Bremnar, is currently displayed at the Shearwater Aviation Museum. This logbook is one of a set of two. It contains an insert that confirms the pilot's understanding of the oxygen equipment, an Air Navigator's Certificate Second class, and a summary of flying assessments for the years 1941 and 1942. The logbook provides details about the aircraft make and model, the hours flown by both pilots and passengers, certification notes, numerical format exercises, operations, bombings, locational data, ASR searches, and a reference to finding survivors of the San Ernesto tanker wreckage. It also includes records of escort operations, a breakdown of hours by location and squadron, and a record of service. SAM.1998.14.1

Lt. (P) Hilliard was a naval aviator with the Royal Canadian navy. Lt (P) Hilliard began his flight training at RCAF Station Centralia, Ontario on August 4, 1949, on Harvard and Expeditor aircraft. On May 3, Lt (P) Hilliard was transferred to RCAF Station Trenton, Ontario, to complete his training on the Harvard and Expeditor. On July 24, 1950, Lt (P) Hilliard was transferred to Operational Flying School 1 Lassiemouth in Moray, North-East Scotland, where he was trained on Firefly aircraft. On October 27, 1950, he was transferred to Operational Flying School 2 - 737 Squadron Eglington, Toronto, Ontario, where he finished his training on Fireflies. On February 8, 1951, Lt. (P) Hilliard was posted to 825 Squadron, 19 Support Air Group Shearwater, Nova Scotia, where he mostly flew Harvard, Firefly, and Avenger, Tracker, and HTL-6 Sioux Helicopters. During his time in HMCS Shearwater, Lt (P) Hilliard served at 825/880 Squadron, VU-32 Squadron, and also spent time flying aboard H.M.C.S. Magnificent. SAM.2005.115.1a

This logbook is the second volume for Sub-Lieutenant Levitin. He joined RCAF/AFHQ/AMTS on February 5th, 1954, as a Navigator on Dakota aircraft. He served in this position until September 4th, 1956, when he reported to RCAF Staff College in Toronto for aircrew training on the Expeditor aircraft. Later, he was transferred to AFHG/DAI where he flew on Dakota's and Expeditors. On January 31st, Sub-Lieutenant Levitin was transferred to CJS London, England, where he flew in Dakotas and Bristol aircraft. He remained there until July 3rd, 1964. SAM.2014.0024.001b

This is a spiral-bound photocopy that contains two pictures of planes on the inside cover. One is black and white, and the other is in color. The second picture has accompanying information about the photograph. The item includes a certification for the Anson Aircraft and a certification of the pilot's reliability. The document contains information about the make and model of the plane flown, the pilot's name, the number of hours flown, exercises and drills recorded in numerical format, courses run, locational information of training received, monthly flying totals, ASR (Submarine Rescue Vessel) searches, bombings, and enemy sightings. It also includes information on duties at new postings such as exercises, instructional duties, and hours flown. This document also includes a record of service and a record of aircraft flown. S/Lt. Frank C. Willis was born and raised in Flin Flon, Manitoba to Fred and Frances Willis. In 1952, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy and was appointed as a Midshipman (SSA) RCN with seniority dated 10/06/1952. He underwent Junior Air Officer Basic Training Course #3 in 1952 while serving in HMCS Cornwallis. He served in HMCS Quebec for Training in 1953 and was appointed as an A/Sub-Lieutenant (P) (SSA) RCN with seniority dated 01/07/1954. He underwent Flying Training in RCAF Centralia in 1953 and Jet Conversion in RCAF Gimli in 1954, and was awarded Pilot Wings on 01/07/1954. In the same year, he served in HMCS Shearwater and RNAS Lossiemouth. He also underwent Carrier Qualifications in H.M.S. Bulwark in 1955 and Banshee Training with USN 1955 in HMCS Niagara. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant (P) (SSA) RCN on 01/12/1955 and served in HMCS Shearwater for Duty with VF-870 Squadron in 1955. He was selected for permanent commission and served in Vt-40 Squadron and VF-870 Squadron in HMCS Shearwater in 1958 and 1959 respectively. He served as Watchkeeper in HMCS Outremont in 1962 and underwent Helicopter Conversion in HU-21 Squadron in HMCS Shearwater in 1964. He served in HS-50 Squadron in HMCS Shearwater in 1965 and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander RCN with seniority dated 27/05/1965. He served as Deputy Commanding Officer in HU-21 Squadron in HMCS Shearwater in 1965 and as Staff Officer Naval Air Requirements in NDHQ in 1966. He underwent Canadian Forces Staff College Course in CFB Toronto in 1967 and served in Maritime Air Requirements in NDHQ in 1968. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel (PLT) with seniority dated 01/07/1971 and served as Commanding Officer in HS-50 Squadron in CFB Shearwater in 1972. He served as Senior Staff Officer Rotary Wing in MARCOM HQ in 1974 and was promoted to the rank of Colonel (PLT) with seniority dated 01/01/1978. He served as Deputy Commander in Maritime Air Group in 1978 and underwent German Language Training in 1981. He served as Canadian Forces Attache Bonn in 1982 and as Canadian Faculty Advisor in the NATO Defence College Rome in 1985. He retired on 01/04/1989 at the rank of Colonel. Throughout his career, S/Lt. Willis flew various aircraft, including Harvard, Slilverstar, Sea Fury, Sea Vampire, Sea Hawk, Expeditor, Skynight, Banshee, and Crusader. He also flew helicopters like the HTL-6 Bell, Sikorsky Horse, Sea King, and the CH-113 Vertol. Colonel (Ret’d) FC WILLIS, RCN, CF, passed away on February 7, 2021, in Halifax, NS. SAM.1998.90.1
