Lomas family fonds

Fonds consists of collected research on the history of the Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s from its earliest records, with a special focus on gold mining and Goldenville, Nova Scotia, as well as the personal archives of the Lomas family recording their decades of public service alongside historical material gathered from their families and the community in Sherbrooke, Nova Scotia. The historical research begins with the earliest inhabitants of the Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s, and continues with the arrival of Europeans, reports on the economic development of the area, essays on regional occupations, churches, charitable organizations, schools, government, transportation, communications, energy, banking, health care, recreation, and the war effort in two world wars. It collects research on the communities of Ecum Secum, Marie Joseph, New Chester, The Liscombs, Spanish Ship Bay, Sherbrooke, Sonora, Wine Harbour, Indian Harbour, Port Hilford, Port Bickerton, Harpelville, Fisherman’s Harbour, Jordanville, Stillwater, Waternish, Melrose, Aspen, The Forks, Denver, Glenelg, Smithfield, the Caledonias, Goshen, Argyle, Garden of Eden and the St. Mary’s River. Goldenville, Nova Scotia, is covered extensively with maps, photographs, census reports and other papers. Many histories of the region are collected in this fond, including unpublished memoirs. Papers from the Prince Henry Sinclair Society, St. Mary’s Historical Society, West River Station Restoration Committee, St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Sherbrooke Library, Sherbrooke Village, Canso Historical Society, and the Liberal Party of Nova Scotia are also in this fonds, alongside a generous collection of material generated by the Lomas family themselves. There are records from the foreign service of Alton Anderson Lomas in the United States, Mexico, Belgium, and China, as well as his political work in Ontario and Nova Scotia. There is also an extensive record of the community service done by Al and Aleah Lomas, notably her work as librarian at the Sherbrooke Library, and several awards for volunteer service. In addition to the Lomas family material, this fonds holds genealogy research for many local families, notably the McKean/McKeen, Anderson, Henderson, Landesberg, and McLane families. There are photographs of local people and landscapes dating back to the 1870 opening of the first bridge over the St. Mary’s River at Sherbrooke, up to the 2005 wedding reception of Aleah Lomas Anderson and Murray Anderson, with an emphasis on the Anderson, Lomas, Palmer, and MacDonald families. The fonds also has audio and video recordings of interviews, speeches, and brief reports discussing topics of interest to the eastern shore of Nova Scotia. Fonds gathers material about the history of Loyalists in Guysborough County, N.S., from their arrival in 1783, as well as the activities of the Country Harbour Loyalist Society, notably their 1983 re-enactment of the Landing of the Loyalists and the 2006 grand opening of the Municipal Park and Loyalist Walking Trail in Stormont, Country Harbour. Fonds includes papers generated by the operation of the society, including paperwork for the incorporation of the society, meeting minutes, event planning notes, and letters of support from the community. The Eastern Shore Archives has collected a variety of cartographic materials produced by a number of different cartographers, government departments, and businesses. These materials were accumulated over time by the archives from various sources as opposed to being generated by a single creator. Collection consists primarily of maps of Nova Scotia and various areas along Nova Scotia’s Eastern shore. They vary from nautical maps to topographical maps, to land grant and Crown Land maps, to geological surveys. Some include illustrations, descriptions, and directories. Part of Eastern Shore Archives map collection
Series forms part of the Eastern Shore Archives map collection and consists of one enlarged map of the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia, from about Musquodoboit Harbour to Ship Harbour. The map was given to Thea Wilson-Hammond by an employee of the Halifax Regional Municipality. It was thought that the map could be used during community meetings for presentations given to residents, allowing them to see the area depicted on a larger scale. Accession number: 2013.044

Part of Robert M. Ritcey fonds
Series forms part of the Robert M. Ritcey fonds and consists of the contents of two binders, each comprising volumes of a work entitled “Memories and family: collections by Robert M. Ritcey” (also entitled “Memories, family, and collections of Robert Milton Ritcey Sr.”). The work is a collection of research material related to the Ritcey family of Nova Scotia, as well as other families connected to the Ritceys, including the Newman, Williams, Bayers, and Gaetz families. The work comprises material created by Ritcey or collected from other sources, and includes text; family trees; excerpts and transcriptions from publications; records such as certificates and forms; correspondence; maps; drawings; and other material. All of the material from the binders is photocopied, with occasional annotations in pencil. Included in the work are drafts of Ritcey’s memoirs “The Place” and “The People”. Also included in the work are colour copies of photographs of Martinique Beach and Dun’s Beach. Ritcey began collating the material in 1986, although he had begun creating some of it in 1972 or earlier, and had been accumulating it for many years before then. Series also includes a letter to the Lake Charlotte Area Heritage Society related to the upcoming publication of part of his work, along with an annotated copy of an introduction to be included in the publication, and a copy of a map of the area around Martinique Beach in around 1937, hand drawn by Ritcey. Series forms part of Lake Charlotte Area Heritage Society fonds and consists of records related to the conception and planning of Memory Lane Heritage Village, particularly phases I and II, which were primarily concerned with the initial establishment of the village. Series also includes records related to the implementation of the plans for the village, including records related to the acquisition of buildings and the construction of the village. Series contains proposals, planning documents, reports, cash flow projections, correspondence, funding applications, notes, meeting minutes, drawings (including early plans, a photo inventory and map of buildings, and other architectural drawings), forms, moving permit applications, video, and other material. Series also includes records related to the initial heritage village proposal led by Ford Webber and Gordon Hammond in 1994, before the society was established. Accession numbers: 2010.014, 2012.017
