Archibald Beaton fonds

Fonds consists of correspondence of Archibald Beaton, Donald MacDonald and Rev. Ronald Beaton in Rome. Letters deal with the opening of the coal mines at Broad Cove in the late 1890s, a description of Rome, and the ordering of a set of bagpipes as a gift. Interspersed there is also bagpipe music, written by Archibald Beaton. MG 12.31

Fonds consists of a scrapbook compiled by Sydenham Howe, mostly documenting his family and his literary and artistic interests. Includes correspondence, predominantly written to and from Hon. Joseph Howe; printed and handwritten poems by Joseph Howe, Maria Morris, Mary Jane Katzman Lawson, and others; prints of engravings and lithographs, many of which depict women's fashions of the mid-19th century; newspaper clippings, several pertaining to poetry and curling; sketches and watercolours by artist Maria Morris as well as Mary Currie and S.J. Howe; visiting cards; autographs dated 1757 onwards; printed material and ephemera, including invitations, the Victoria School of Art and Design exhibibition of loans catalogue, 1887, and 1889 issue of Halifax Carnival, and three Notman photographs of John Howe and John and Mary (Currie) Ross. Fonds gathers material about the history of Loyalists in Guysborough County, N.S., from their arrival in 1783, as well as the activities of the Country Harbour Loyalist Society, notably their 1983 re-enactment of the Landing of the Loyalists and the 2006 grand opening of the Municipal Park and Loyalist Walking Trail in Stormont, Country Harbour. Fonds includes papers generated by the operation of the society, including paperwork for the incorporation of the society, meeting minutes, event planning notes, and letters of support from the community.
