Item is a handwritten certificate awarding John Frederick Traugott Gschwind with an Order of Military Merit (Orden pour la Vertu Militaire) from the Hessian Army signed by Frantz Carl Erdman von Seitz. It is written in French and German, with a red wax seal attached. On the back is written “Discharge from the Hessian --?-- 1st June 1782”. Provides additional documentation on the presence of the Hessian Army in Halifax after the American Revolutionary War.

Consists of 5 telegrams to Howard’s parents William and Maud Pentelow from the Royal Canadian Naval College and from Deputy Minister of Naval Services (Dec 7 to 9, 1917); a letter from Howard to his mother Maud detailing his experience of the Halifax Explosion on Dec 6, 1917 (Dec 1917) and treatment in hospital; and 2 photographic copy prints of Howard Pentelow in uniform, taken later (ca.1920s).

Images include ships in Halifax Harbour firing their guns at night, crowds of people on the street with some carrying boxes, damaged store fronts, and a group of soldiers at a restaurant lunch counter.

Fonds consists of a handwritten memoir by Violet M. Fry written in 1967 containing 2 pages of verse and 7 pages of narration recounting her experience of the explosion on December 6, 1917, the subsequent search for missing Currie family members with her father James Currie, and her family’s living conditions in the weeks following the Halifax Explosion. Also includes a copy of a 1932 photograph of Violet at age 30 with her husband Wilfred Fry and four children.

Labour Standards Tribunal

Consists of decisions and selected case files of the Labour Standards Tribunal. Case files may contain the initial complaint, investigation notes, evidence presented, the decision of the Director of Labour Standards, the notice of appeal, additional evidence presented by the parties, a record of the Tribunal's hearing of the case, the Tribunal's decision and records related to any appeal of that decision. A few cases, heard only by the Director and not appealed to the Tribunal, were also included in the same accession (2018-013) While all decisions have been retained, the Archives applied selection criteria to the case files. Case files that were referenced in other cases, cases that were appealed to the Supreme Court, cases with extensive decisions by the Tribunal, non-routine cases with implications beyond the parties involved, and cases for which the Tribunal's decisions were anonymized were retained. (Although by legislation the Tribunal's hearings and the evidence heard were public, the Tribunal could specifically decide to meet in camera.)
