Thomas O. Geddes fonds

Consists of day books and ledgers documenting Dr. Geddes' medical practice in Barrington and Yarmouth for over fifty years. Day books contain name of patient, cost of visit, and any treatments and prescriptions. Some entries provide detailed remarks on patients and medical conditions. Additional day book on microfilm, 1865-1866, also contains notes on the settlement of Barrington as well as medical and business accounts and notes. A few ledgers were probably accumulated while Geddes was a customs excise officer and contain a list of names, many of which are captains, freight, and passage. Also contains a ledger, 1830-1835, predominantly dealing with the settlement of the estate of R. Kelley and a ledger, 1838-1893, inscribed with the names Drs. James and Thomas Geddes. Thomas McCulloch

Consists of letters between McCulloch and his friends and colleagues, Rev. James Mitchell and Jotham Blanchard, discussing the affairs of Pictou Academy, the Presbyterian Church in Nova Scotia, relations with the Church of Scotland, Lord Dalhousie, and personal and political news. Other correspondents include C.D. Archibald regarding Dalhousie College, George Smith, George Young, Rev. K.J. McKenzie, and Rev. Thomas Trotter. Also contains subscription lists, minutes of meetings, correspondence, petitions, and accounts concerning Pictou Academy; scientific notes and lectures given by McCulloch; speeches and sermons; theological and literary writings, including manuscripts of the letters of Mephibosheth Stepsure, "William", "Melville", "Auld Eppie's tales", and an unpublished novel; minutes of congregation meetings; and publications including newspapers and pamphlets accumulated by McCulloch and his family. Contains some correspondence and other items relating to McCulloch's sons, Rev. William McCulloch and Thomas McCulloch Jr., and letters from Mrs. J.W. McCulloch to granddaughter Elizabeth McCulloch. Fonds consists of a journal entitled "Journal of a Whaling Voyage made by the Barque Rose of Halifax, that sailed the 15th January 1843, Bound to the Pacific for Sperm Whales - Thomas T. Wood, Master, and Returned". In three volumes, Creighton's journal recounts his daily activities as a seaman, such as coopering, sewing clothes and mending sails, duty watch, dealing with customs duties, his experiences ashore, whaling and preparing oil for shipment, as well as weather reports, geographical locations, strange star sightings and other topics of nineteenth century navigational interest. At the end of the third volume, the journal includes a list of vessels encountered during the trip, entitled "a Memo of Ship's Spoken during the Voyage" which includes the date of event, name of vessel, name of master, where it was from, length of time at sea, amount of oil and geographical location. Fonds consists of records mostly relating to Cantley's business activities with the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Co., including letter books and loose correspondence, some personal, 1903-1911; Bluenose Gold Mining company letter book, 1899-1913; legal and financial records, some concerning the consolidation of the British Empire Steel Corporation Limited (BESCO); correspondence, press clippings, reports and other items regarding the Canadian Shell Committee and the Canadian Northern Railway; newspaper clippings and articles pertaining to Cantley and the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Co.; photocopy of his journal and notes on his trips to Europe, 1908, 1909, 1913, 1915, 1916, 1919; some speeches and articles written by Cantley and other miscellaneous items; and bound scrapbooks, one containing ca. sixty photographs, plans, and descriptions of company operations and facilities.
