Part of F. Mitchell, Hosking family fonds
Series forms part of F. Mitchell, Hosking family fonds and consists of personal receipts, invoices, bills, lists of expenditures, and policies mostly belonging to the Hosking and Mitchell families, as well as one receipt from the store of G. L. Monk in Ship Harbour for lumber. Series also includes one land grant, two land indentures, two maps and one bill of sale.The land grant is dated August 12, 1834 and in it the Crown grants Colin Mitchell Sr. two hundred acres of land in Oyster Pond adjacent to a lot of land granted to Edward Hare. The document discusses the boundaries of the property and includes a map of the Oyster Pond area, clearly showing Colin Mitchell’s land grant as well as that of Edward Hares, and land near Navy Pool surveyed for W. Myers. The land grant is signed by Lieutenant Governor, Major General Sir Colin Campbell. The second map in the series is of a land grant map of Halifax County from the Department of Lands and Forests dated 1932.The land indentures include one transaction between Samuel Mitchell and John D. Mitchell dated April 7, 1873. In it, Samuel Mitchell gives John D. Mitchell a parcel of land at the head of Jeddore harbour, in the area of Oyster Pond, for the sum of forty dollars. The document is witnessed by Timothy Archibald John Cribby. The second indenture is between Hibbert, Lord Bishop of Nova Scotia, and Archibald Prest and dated 1883. In the indenture, Prest buys a parcel of land in Mooseland for the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars. The bill of sale is dated November 25, 1874 and transfers sixty-four shares in the ship P.C. Hill to John Mitchell. Series also includes records regarding the settlement of the estate and outstanding debts of the late Philip Mitchell. The estate was settled by his nephew, John Duncan Mitchell. Accession numbers 2003.011, 2010.013

Part of Garth M. Hosking General Store fonds
Series forms part of Garth M. Hosking General Store fonds and consists of supplier invoices requesting payment for goods purchased by the store. Series also contains receipts for goods purchased in person from local or travelling suppliers. Shipping slips generated when goods were sent by vessel (1890-1920s), train (1930s), and transport truck (1940s and 1950s) are also included. Occasionally other records of a personal nature (some doctor's bills) are filed with invoices as per original order. Series reflects the change in the nature of business over the decades, from personalized letters acknowledging receipt of payment or goods, to daily order and monthly statements. Invoices list goods purchased on a regular basis, their quantity and price. Envelopes that the invoices were sent in reflect the accounting practice of Willy O Mitchell.Series also includes four receipt books for goods sold to local individuals dated between 1971 and 1977 as well as a certificate of inspection of the store’s weights and measures, dated to 1897. Series forms part of the Pleasant Point School trustees fonds and consists of financial records including Municipality of Halifax taxation lists for Pleasant Point School section 79 from 1911 to 1928, tax assessment rolls from 1939 to 1948, and tax collectors’ rolls from 1897 to 1901 and 1906 to 1908. Also included are tax collectors’ rolls for school section 79 to Secretary to the trustees John Hawkins from 1915 to 1922, Howard Williams 1923, and Samuel D. Kent from 1927 to 1935. Series also consists of receipts for teachers’ salaries from 1918 to 1939 as well as school maintenance receipts and receipts for supplies, work done to the school, etc. from 1945 to 1946. In addition, series consists of memorandums concerning the amount of County School Funds to which the school section is entitled from 1897 to 1937. Accession number 2013.022

Series is part of the Laura F. Stoddard family fonds and contains one booklet from The Great-West Life Assurance Company that includes financial notes as well as a handwritten will whose author and beneficiaries are unknown. Series also includes one Halifax County tax receipt to Walter Stoddard from 1903, one life insurance policy for W. E. Stoddard from 1914 and one insurance policy renewal notice. Series also consists of one permit for transit from Halifax to Clam Harbour for the body of Florence Stoddard, sister of Laura Stoddard. Accession number: 2013.010

Webber, one receipt for a subscription to the Halifax Evening Post in the name of Reuben Webber, one log scale perhaps used for work in the lumber trade, one handwritten record of cords of wood cut for Reuben Webber in 1930, and one Farmer’s Note Book belonging to Ervin Webber including notes and financial information. Series forms part of Anna Barbara Webber family fonds and consists of records related to historical and genealogical research undertaken by Webber family members. Series includes correspondence, notes, family trees, and a copy of an article. Series also includes the front and back covers and title page of a bible which was given to Anna Barbara Webber by her sister Lily in 1909. On the bible's covers are recorded the birth, baptism and confirmation dates of Allen, Frances, and Blois Webber, as well as the date of Frances Webber's marriage to Douglas Robson. In addition, series includes a receipt for furniture purchased by William Wilson Webber in 1914. Accession number: 2010.009

Part of Grace (Williams) Forsythe fonds
Series forms part of the Grace (Williams) Forsythe fonds and consists of records related to Alexander ‘Sandy’ and Cora (Harpell) Myers, who was the sister of Grace’s mother. Cora was born on January 26, 1896 in West Jeddore and became a teacher in the early 1900s. She and her husband Sandy (1893-1957) owned the Salmon River House where Grace lived for several years following her retirement. A note found among the records indicates that they were used by Grace to help create the publications produced by the Marine Highway Historical Society. The series includes a photograph of Cora Harpell’s class at Ostrea Lake School in 1915 with the names of the students; a scrapbook containing clippings of songs; stories; and the prize winners of a matrimonial letter contest featuring Cora’s entry, No Fake Gentleman. Also included are various clippings regarding her school in Ostrea Lake; her graduating class from the Provincial Normal College in 1914; as well as handwritten poems and stories. Series also includes the lyrics to the Normal College school song, an application for a teacher’s license in 1912 that was rejected because she was too young, and a teacher’s license issued in 1914, as well as an earlier letter from a friend in1911. Cora died in Musquodoboit Harbour on February 24, 1995 at the age of 99. Series also contains receipts including postal and remitters’ receipts, invoices, ration forms and coupons, product labels, local business letterhead and advertisements, coupons, tax assessments, a tax notice, and enumeration records. Also included is correspondence to Sandy Myers from people coming to Salmon River House, a Christmas card from Arnold Logan, a Guide’s License, and an order form for a vest. Accession number: 2010.032
