Part of F. Mitchell, Hosking family fonds
Series forms part of F. Mitchell, Hosking family fonds and consists of personal receipts, invoices, bills, lists of expenditures, and policies mostly belonging to the Hosking and Mitchell families, as well as one receipt from the store of G. L. Monk in Ship Harbour for lumber. Series also includes one land grant, two land indentures, two maps and one bill of sale.The land grant is dated August 12, 1834 and in it the Crown grants Colin Mitchell Sr. two hundred acres of land in Oyster Pond adjacent to a lot of land granted to Edward Hare. The document discusses the boundaries of the property and includes a map of the Oyster Pond area, clearly showing Colin Mitchell’s land grant as well as that of Edward Hares, and land near Navy Pool surveyed for W. Myers. The land grant is signed by Lieutenant Governor, Major General Sir Colin Campbell. The second map in the series is of a land grant map of Halifax County from the Department of Lands and Forests dated 1932.The land indentures include one transaction between Samuel Mitchell and John D. Mitchell dated April 7, 1873. In it, Samuel Mitchell gives John D. Mitchell a parcel of land at the head of Jeddore harbour, in the area of Oyster Pond, for the sum of forty dollars. The document is witnessed by Timothy Archibald John Cribby. The second indenture is between Hibbert, Lord Bishop of Nova Scotia, and Archibald Prest and dated 1883. In the indenture, Prest buys a parcel of land in Mooseland for the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars. The bill of sale is dated November 25, 1874 and transfers sixty-four shares in the ship P.C. Hill to John Mitchell. Series also includes records regarding the settlement of the estate and outstanding debts of the late Philip Mitchell. The estate was settled by his nephew, John Duncan Mitchell. Accession numbers 2003.011, 2010.013

Part of Chezzetcook Historical Society fonds
Series forms part of the Chezzetcook Historical Society fonds and consists of seven maps, each 71 x 114 cm or smaller. Most of the maps are copies of historical property plans, including two copies (one larger and one smaller) of an 1863 plan showing the subdivision of Gaetz and Nieforth properties at Three Fathom Harbour, a 1780s plan showing division of land lots at Lawrencetown, Little Jeddore Harbour (now known as Three Fathom Harbour), and Chezzetcook; an 1881 plan of division of the property of Leonard and Martin Conrod at Seaforth, and an undated plan of early land grants from Musquodoboit Harbour to Chezzetcook. Series also contains two modern maps, including a hydrographic map of the coast from Shut-in Island to Popes Harbour, and a topographical map of Porters Lake.

Series forms part of the Robert M. Ritcey fonds and consists of the contents of two binders, each comprising volumes of a work entitled “Memories and family: collections by Robert M. Ritcey” (also entitled “Memories, family, and collections of Robert Milton Ritcey Sr.”). The work is a collection of research material related to the Ritcey family of Nova Scotia, as well as other families connected to the Ritceys, including the Newman, Williams, Bayers, and Gaetz families. The work comprises material created by Ritcey or collected from other sources, and includes text; family trees; excerpts and transcriptions from publications; records such as certificates and forms; correspondence; maps; drawings; and other material. All of the material from the binders is photocopied, with occasional annotations in pencil. Included in the work are drafts of Ritcey’s memoirs “The Place” and “The People”. Also included in the work are colour copies of photographs of Martinique Beach and Dun’s Beach. Ritcey began collating the material in 1986, although he had begun creating some of it in 1972 or earlier, and had been accumulating it for many years before then. Series also includes a letter to the Lake Charlotte Area Heritage Society related to the upcoming publication of part of his work, along with an annotated copy of an introduction to be included in the publication, and a copy of a map of the area around Martinique Beach in around 1937, hand drawn by Ritcey. Part of Eastern Shore Archives map collection
Series forms part of the map collection and consists of reproductions of maps of the Nova Scotia’s East coast, originally charted and published by the British Admiralty. One of the maps is a reproduction of the former British Admiralty chart 2439 (M-016), reproduced by the Canadian Hydrographic Service, Surveys and Mapping Branch, Department of Mines and Technical Surveys in 1960. There is also a second map published by the Canadian Hydrographic Service entitled Nova Scotia’s Southeast Coast: Taylor’s Head to Shut-in Island, dated 1987, with an insert showing Ship Harbour and its approaches. Two of the maps show the diversities of the coast, ledges, shoals, rocks, soundings, and the quality of the bottom and were originally compiled by Captain Bayfield and Commander Orlebar of the Royal Navy, in 1867. Additions and corrections were made from the Canadian Government Charts in 1918 to 1924 and the final edition was published in 1935 as part of coastal survey conducted in consequence of an order from the Right Honourable Lord Commissioners of the Admiralty. Series forms part of the Eastern Shore Archives map collection and consists of one enlarged map of the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia, from about Musquodoboit Harbour to Ship Harbour. The map was given to Thea Wilson-Hammond by an employee of the Halifax Regional Municipality. It was thought that the map could be used during community meetings for presentations given to residents, allowing them to see the area depicted on a larger scale. Accession number: 2013.044

Part of Katherine L. Stoddard family fonds
Series forms part of the Katherine L. Stoddard fonds and consists of genealogical research and records pertaining to various Eastern Shore families. The families who feature most prominently are the Stoddards and Ritceys (Henrici), however, the Shellnut, Eisan, Anderson, Siteman, Gaetz (Gates), Newcomb, Bayers, Robson, MacEachern, Blaxland. Records appear primarily the result of research conducted by Katherine Stoddard, however, some records note that documents were copied by Annabel Siteman Ells and may have been intended for Katherine’s mother, Eva, who may also have conducted genealogical research. Series also includes an incomplete copy of A Brief History of the Stoddards of Halifax County written by Elsie Florence Stoddard. Records include information on many pioneer families on the Eastern Shore, including the families of Thomas Stoddard, Leonard and Martin Gaetz, and Henry Seidman (Seidemann) as well as information on the origins of the Ritcey family beginning with Johannis Christophorus Henrici. Records include handwritten information, copies of information from various sources including vital statistics and newspapers, and books in which Katherine Stoddard recorded information about her own family, one of which features a drawing of a map that shows various landowners around Clam Harbour and Owl’s Head. Series forms part of the Annabel (Siteman) Ells fonds and consists of records related to the acquisition, sale, and transfer of land including deeds, grants, indentures, and petitions. Also included are notes regarding Crown Land and wills, correspondence, abstracts, a list of children brought from England and distributed on the Eastern Shore, maps, school trustee and assembly papers. Part of Helene Read fonds
Series forms part of the Helene Read fonds and consists of a land indenture dated August 8, 1799 in which possession of land in Clam Harbour is passed from Robert, Colin, and Patrick Campbell and their wives to Thomas Stoddard. Series also includes information concerning other land grants in Clam Harbour belonging to the Campbell and Stoddard families between 1765 to 1894 and 1945. Four maps are also included in the series and include plans dated 1956 showing the division of the estate of James Stoddard as per his will, a map of the lands of Ralph Stoddard dated 1970, and two maps showing the subdivision of Lot 1 lands owned by Douglas F. Stoddard dated 1963. In addition there is one map of the land belonging to Robert Sr., Duncan, and Robert Campbell as well as two pages of microfilm copies of the land grant document presumably for that piece of land c. 1760. All maps pertain to land in Clam Harbour. Series also contains copies of the wills of James Edward Stoddard, Thomas Stoddard, Adam Stoddard, Edmund Fanning Stoddard, and documents concerning the estate of Nancy Stoddard. Series forms part of Robert Kim Stevens fonds and consists of one early Italian map of Acadia, Ile Royale and the surrounding area including Ile St. Jean. The map was likely drawn by Jacques-Nicholas Bellin, a French-born hydrographer and geographer who produced many maps of Canada and other French territories in North America and was chief cartographer of the French Navy in 1721 and later Official Hydrographer of the King. 2013.026
