Lena Ferguson fonds

Fonds consists of approximately 137 hours of oral history interviews conducted by Lena Ferguson. Most interviewees were residents of the Eastern Shore region of Halifax County, particularly the Chezzetcook area. Interview topics include genealogy, local industries, occupations, music, shipping, community life, traditions, and folklore. In addition to interviews, the creator recorded school reunions, concerts, weddings, and church anniversaries. Several paper transcripts are included as well as scrapbooks featuring articles written by Lena and other newspaper articles regarding the Chezzetcook area. 2019.014

Sub-series consists of publications issued by the Marine Highway Historical Society, and in which Helen Jennex was involved, including Eight Years of Marine Whispers, Bygone Snippets, Backward Glances, and All Through the Year. Sub-series also includes two publications produced by Society member Grace Forsythe, including Tales of the Yesteryears and More Tales of the Yesteryears. Accession number: 2009.039

Consists of records created and accumulated by Grace Edith Forsythe primarily during her career as an educator and as a result of her involvement with the Marine Highway Historical Society, including records related to her teaching career, photographs, and material related to local history. Also included are publications produced by the Marine Highway Historical Society as well as layouts and preliminary copies. Contents also include scrapbooks, correspondence, advertisements, recipes, and material related to the Red Cross Society. In addition, fonds includes records acquired by Grace Forsythe and related to her aunt and uncle Cora (Harpell) and Sandy Myers, who owned the Salmon River House and with whom Grace lived for a time. Series forms part of the Grace (Williams) Forsythe fonds and consists of the minute book of the West Jeddore School trustees from 1944 to 1959, scripts of pageants that may have been performed in schools, and a periodical entitled The Canadian Red Cross Junior, Vol. XXIII, No. 10 dated 1944, which reflects Grace Forsythe’s involvement with the Red Cross Society and her efforts to establish Junior Red Cross Societies in her schools. Series also contains three books created by Grace’s students including a scrapbook of clippings of famous people created by a grade seven class in 1953, a book of stories and drawings entitled Our Story Book created by students in 1961, and a book of stories of rescue created by grade six students in 1962. Also included is a book of lesson plans written by Grace in summer school in Truro in 1942 and an article containing the autobiographical account of Dr. G. G. Sedgewick entitled, A Secret Chapter in the History of Education, which recounts the trials of a new teacher in Oyster Pond in 1900. In addition, series contains a typed copy of Grace Forsythe’s memoirs of her teaching career together with a scrapbook of photographs of students from 1932-1957, illustrating her story, and two certificates recording her completion of grades nine and ten which also list subjects studied and grades received. Series forms part of the Grace (Williams) Forsythe fonds and consists of locally produced publications related to the history of communities on the Eastern Shore. Included in the series are two publications on the history of St. James Church and Jeddore, commemorating the 130th and 150th anniversaries of the St. James congregation, dated 1963 and 1983 respectively. Also included is the revised 1979 edition of a publication written by David E. Stephens, entitled the Story of the Musquodoboit Railway. Series also contains an article written by Margaret Davis entitled, Historical Society answers questions, which discusses how Grace Forsythe and Helen Jennex of the Marine Historical Society helped to answer the question of how Ava and Evangeline Kent passed away in the late1800s. The question was posed after the author discovered their graves in a forgotten graveyard in Pleasant Point. The article also discusses the resources offered by the Society and the publications that they issue. Series also contains a handwritten, one page history of the Red Cross Society in Jeddore. Also included are the histories of Jeddore businesses written by students, c. late 1940s. Businesses mentioned include Nathanial Dooks’ grocery store, the Jeddore post office, B. O. Myers grocery store, and Ralph Bonn’s blacksmith shop. Accession number: 2010.032

Series consists of publications produced by the Marine Highway Historical Society between 1977 and 1985. Grace Forsythe was the treasurer of the Marine Highway Historical Society, contributed to the production of these publications, and in later issues served as editor along with Helen Jennex. Publications in this series include two volumes of verses compiled by Reuben George, an unbound copy of Reminiscence (1976) given to Ada Williams by Helen Jennex, Rambling Memories (1977), Forget- Me-Not Reflections (1978), Backward Glances (1979), Children’s Thoughts (1980), Around the Harbour (1981 with 1983,1988 updates), One Day at a Time (1982), Along the Shore (1982), Eight Years of Marine Whispers (1983), The Gull’s Cry (1984), Bygone Snippets (1984) and Marine Whispers (1985). Series also contains a preliminary copy of a book entitled Memory Verses (1984).Also included are loose pages of publication layouts featuring collages of advertisements, letterheads, and other memorabilia. Fonds consists of financial records belonging to William Gaetz including insurance papers, receipts, correspondence, documents related to the estate of Josephine Gaetz, and military pension information. Also included are records related to Gaetz’s time spent serving in WWI, correspondence with soldiers during WWII, records related to Gaetz’s membership in the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and the Musquodoboit Harbour United Church for which Gaetz acted as treasurer. Church records include financial papers and correspondence, account books, receipts, religious education material, meeting minutes, photographs, insurance documents, and other material. Fonds also includes records pertaining to electoral districts and voters as Gaetz was one of the revisors of the voter lists for his district. In addition, fonds includes lists of officers of the Musquodoboit Harbour Volunteer Fire Department and other material. Accession number 2012.001
