Luke Elwood Family Fonds

Fonds consists of records created and collected by Luke Elwood and the Elwood family (Lawrencetown, Halifax County, Nova Scotia) throughout Luke’s childhood and into early adulthood. These records reflect Luke’s experiences as an elementary student with an intellectual disability whose family challenged his placement in a Special Education class, rather than with his grade-level peers at his neighborhood school. The result was a court-ordered settlement, and Luke was permitted an integrated educational experience (see Biographical Sketch and Notes for more information). In addition to Elwood family-generated records, the fonds also contains collected material related to this landmark legal case, and subsequent scholarship.The records of this fonds extend from 1977, when Luke was born, to 2016. Collection comprises two scrapbooks assembled by Ruth Marilyn (Goodman) Pink. The first was created during Goodman's years as a student at Dalhousie and contains photographs; dance cards; place cards; programs; schedules; and memorabilia from freshman initiation and other events. Lena Ferguson fonds

Fonds consists of approximately 137 hours of oral history interviews conducted by Lena Ferguson. Most interviewees were residents of the Eastern Shore region of Halifax County, particularly the Chezzetcook area. Interview topics include genealogy, local industries, occupations, music, shipping, community life, traditions, and folklore. In addition to interviews, the creator recorded school reunions, concerts, weddings, and church anniversaries. Several paper transcripts are included as well as scrapbooks featuring articles written by Lena and other newspaper articles regarding the Chezzetcook area. 2019.014

Fonds consists primarily of documents related to Katherine L. Stoddard’s research and her interest in genealogy, particularly that of her own family. Stoddard’s records include information related to many Eastern Shore families, including the Stoddard and Ritcey families, as well as local history. Fonds also includes correspondence, cookbooks and handwritten recipes, photographs, postcards, maps, certificates, land grants, yearbooks, deeds, and wills. Accession number: 2013.008

Collection consists of daily attendance registers from various schools along the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia, accumulated by the Easter Shore Archives. Records were created between 1891 and 1987, and in about 2003. Registers date from 1891 to 1987 and are usually identified by school name, section number, district or municipality, county, and school year. Some schools have a more complete range of records than others. Information recorded in the registers includes full name of student, date of birth, record of vaccination and inoculations, and name and address of parent or guardian. A variety of additional annual statistics and prescriptions are also included. Most of the registers are arranged by school name and chronologically within each school. Collection also includes a copy of a 1920-1921 register from the Sheet Harbour Road school, produced ca. 2003.
