Item consists of a painted portrait of William Caldwell, the first mayor of Halifax, Nova Scotia to be elected directly by citizens. Mayors from 1841-1850 were selected by aldermen and common councillors from among themselves. The painting is framed in a gold-painted wooden frame. A metal plaque on the frame reads: "William Caldwell / The First Mayor of Halifax / Elected by the Citizens - / Civic year October 1850 / to October 1851." With annotations noting "demolished", etc. 102-4A.5.5a has an overlay map showing Gannon's lot. Both maps include numbers added in red near buildings, though it is unclear what they relate to.
