              The collection contains textual records and photographs that demonstrate the activities of several members of the Blaikie Family of Great Village, NS, for almost a century from the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s. Items were arranged into series by the archivist based on record type or content, including: letters; insurance policies for various properties in Great Village; payment agreements; Estate of Melinda (Gould) Blaikie; bills; land deeds; John Wier contracts; World War I correspondence, mostly between Joseph McKay Blaikie and Blanche Johnson; ledgers; documents related to the shipbuilding and shipping industries, focusing on “The Peerless”, “Chieftain”, and “The President”. The fonds also contains assorted items related to community organizations and happenings in Great Village, NS, including: day books for Ezra Layton’s store; Iron Age Division of the Sons of Temperance; dyke books; play bills; Corinthians Lodge; war rations books; Women’s Institute of Great Village; and a scrapbook. The photograph collection contains a large number of portraits, with most people identified as members of the Blaikie Family.               Series forms part of Laura F. Stoddard family fonds and consists of eleven postcards, a Christmas card, and several notes to Hannah, Walter, and Laura Stoddard from various correspondents and from all over the world including Italy, the United States, and Britain. Series also contains ten letters to Walter and Hannah Stoddard from Reverend James Anderson including nine prayer cards. In addition there are two military Christmas cards from 1918 to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Stoddard including one from a Private Duncan near [Brussels] and one from France from N. Webber of the Canadian Forestry Corps, 70th Co. Overseas. There is also one letter to Mrs. Hannah Stoddard from the Imperial War Graves Commission dated 1923 concerning the erection of a headstone, correspondence to Hannah Stoddard from the Treasury Department, Bureau of War Risk Insurance concerning the life insurance of Frank Cecil Stoddard who was enlisted in the US army; and a wreath order form and card sent to Mrs. W. E. Stoddard from the War Graves Commission. Series also includes a number of birth and wedding announcements as well as a letter to Walter Stoddard from his brother Dr. T. A. Stoddard discussing the purchase of land to establish a muskrat, mink, and fox fur farm. There is also a booklet on raising muskrats, which is referenced in the letter. Accession number: 2013.010

              Series forms part of Garth M. Hosking General Store fonds and consists of correspondence related to the Store, including a letter from a customer to Mildred Hosking, and a letter to Garth Hosking from the Employment Insurance Commission. Series also includes sets of blank letterheads and invoices in W.M.O. Mitchell’s name from the 1910s. Also included in the series is a 1941 license to sell gasoline issued to W.M.O. Mitchell. Series also includes blank letterheads from Hosking’s Garage. In addition, series includes a 1904 list of voters from the number 27 polling district of Halifax County.               Series forms part of Harris M. Blakeney family fonds and consists of a letter from T.H. Stoddard, Funeral Director, for Sun Life Assurance Co. and receipts, including Victory Bond, tax, and doctor receipts. One receipt from J. S. Manchester, M. D. has a letter written on the back to the doctor from Harris Blakeney regarding an error in the doctor’s bill.

              Series forms part of the Burris Russell fonds and consists of an unemployment insurance commission book from 1969-1970 that belonged to Burris Russell. Series also contains a bill of sale dated April 7, 1962 for a fishing boat sold to Wallace Russell by Burris Russell for two hundred and fifty dollars. Thomas ‘Wallace’ Murray Russell and Burris ‘Bub’ Russell were second cousins twice removed. Accession number: 2013.017

              Series is part of the Laura F. Stoddard family fonds and contains one booklet from The Great-West Life Assurance Company that includes financial notes as well as a handwritten will whose author and beneficiaries are unknown. Series also includes one Halifax County tax receipt to Walter Stoddard from 1903, one life insurance policy for W. E. Stoddard from 1914 and one insurance policy renewal notice. Series also consists of one permit for transit from Halifax to Clam Harbour for the body of Florence Stoddard, sister of Laura Stoddard. Accession number: 2013.010
