Scope and content

Series forms part of Garth M. Hosking General Store fonds and consists of supplier invoices requesting payment for goods purchased by the store. Series also contains receipts for goods purchased in person from local or travelling suppliers. Shipping slips generated when goods were sent by vessel (1890-1920s), train (1930s), and transport truck (1940s and 1950s) are also included. Occasionally other records of a personal nature (some doctor's bills) are filed with invoices as per original order. Series reflects the change in the nature of business over the decades, from personalized letters acknowledging receipt of payment or goods, to daily order and monthly statements. Invoices list goods purchased on a regular basis, their quantity and price. Envelopes that the invoices were sent in reflect the accounting practice of Willy O Mitchell.
Series also includes four receipt books for goods sold to local individuals dated between 1971 and 1977 as well as a certificate of inspection of the store’s weights and measures, dated to 1897. Also includes cheque receipts from 1974-1975.
