        History

John Edward Lantz owned a store at 319 Main Street in Mahone Bay. He bought the property in 1895 from Sarah Slaugenwhite, widow of Benjamin Slaugenwhite who built the home in c.1875. Lantz’s store was for groceries and furniture. John's parents were Edward Lantz and Sarah Ham. John was born in 1849. In 1872, John married his first wife, Sarah E. Dauphinee, and had four children, including Alister E. Lantz (1880-1957). John is listed as a merchant in 1891 and then, in 1901, he’s listed as a merchant “working on own account,” which we assume refers to him owning his own store. According to his death certificate, he worked as a merchant until 1936. When John died in 1937, his son Alister continued to run the store with his wife Bertha (Countway) Lantz.
