Biographical history

Janet Kitz came originally from Camwath, Lanarkshire, Scotland. She moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia and married Leonard Kitz in 1971. Since 1980 she has conducted research on the Halifax Explosion. In 1987 she helped to mount an exhibit on the disaster, A Moment in Time, at Halifax's Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, where she was working as a research associate. She is the author of a number of books on the Halifax Explosion.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of material created and accumulated by Janet Kitz in preparation for the publcation of her books on the Halifax Harbour Explosion of 1917. Includes photographs by Gauvin and Gentzell of the north end of Halifax after the explosion, as well as research material relating to survivors of the explosion. The research materials consist of tape recorded interviews of survivors of the event, interview transcripts and photographs and slides of those who were interviewed.

The arrangement of the Gauvin & Gentzell photographs is chronological while the research materials are arranged alphabetically according to the surname of the person being interviewed.
