Administrative history
The store that was in later years called John M. Homans, General Merchant was established at Clam Harbour in 1901 by Ebenezer Homans (1858-1933). Ebenezer’s son, John Mackintosh Homans (1892-1977) continued running the store after his father's death. The Homans family were prominent business people in Clam Harbour and in addition to the store, they also operated a clam canning operation in Clam Harbour [ca.1920s] and a lobster factory in Little Harbour [ca.1930s-1940s]. In about the early 1930s, the store was renovated, with a new part being built around the old store structure (with the old building remaining intact). The Homans store closed ca.1972.
Custodial history
The ledger was given to Helen Jennex by store owner John Homans in 1969. It was kept in a trunk with other material at her home until sometime after her death in 1986, when her son Otis Jennex Jr. gave the material to Lake Charlotte Area Heritage Society member Ford Webber. Webber kept the material in a shed until it was transferred to the Eastern Shore Archives at some point between 2003 and 2009.
The receipt books were possibly transferred to the Hosking Store, Oyster Pond, and were donated by Mildred Hosking in 1995 when the Hosking Store was dismantled. They were then transferred by members of the Lake Charlotte Area Heritage Society to the basement of society member Gordon Hammond’s home in Clam Harbour. In 2003, they were transferred to the Eastern Shore Archives.
