The Planning Advisory Committee, which existed 1949-1996, was given its duties and powers by the Town Planning Act. It met at least once a week. It held public hearings on re-zoning applications and dealt with building problems. The committee had previously been known as the Planning Board and changed its name in 1970.

The Planning Advisory Committee, which existed 1979-1996, replaced the Municipal Development Plan Committee. The Committee was composed of the Mayor, two Aldermen, and eight other persons appointed by Council. It reviewed development proposals, amendments proposed to the Municipal Development Plan and to the Zoning Bylaw, and any other matter related to the Plan.
