    Administrative history

The Mahone Bay Agricultural Society was founded in November 1894 at a meeting in John Mader’s Hall in Mahone Bay. Lewis Knaut served as the society’s first president. At the time, such societies were being organized throughout the province with the goal of improving livestock and promoting the best agricultural practices. With the support of annual grants from the provincial government, the number of societies grew to more than two hundred. The Mahone Bay society remained active until at least 1961.

    Custodial history

The fonds was salvaged from the Inglis-Quinlan house by Mahone Bay Settlers Museum in 1988, after the death of Clara Quinlan, when the remaining contents were being sold or discarded.

    Scope and content

Fonds consists of certificates, correspondence, financial records, membership records, livestock records, and minutes documenting the activities of the society and its efforts to promote agriculture in the Mahone Bay area of Lunenburg County.
