Marian Binkley fonds

Marian Binkley is currently a professor in the Department of Anthropology and Social Anthropology at Dalhousie University. She received her B.A. Honours in Anthropology and History at the University of Toronto (University of Trinity College) in 1973, her M.A. in Anthropology at the University of Toronto in 1975, and her Ph.D. in Anthropology at the University of Toronto in 1981.

Binkley has conducted extensive research in maritime communities. Her first two books, Voices from Offshore (1994) and Risks, Dangers and Rewards in the Nova Scotia Offshore Fishery (1995), focus on working conditions in the Nova Scotia deep sea fishing fleet. Her next monograph, Set Adrift: Fishing Families (2002), compares the households of coastal and deep sea fishermen with regards to how they adapt to the extraordinary pressures put upon them by the current Atlantic Canadian fisheries crisis and its effects on fishermen's work. Her latest volume Changing Tides: Gender, Globalization and World Fisheries (2005) - co-edited with Barbara Neis, Sirj Gerard, and Christina Manezy - explores the relationship between globalization and gender against the backdrop of the world fisheries crisis. Dr. Binkley's current research explores sustainable livelihoods in Atlantic Canadian coastal communities, with a particular focus on how the Atlantic Fisheries crisis has changed the way people make a living and go about their daily lives. One project looks at issues associated with occupational health and safety concerns of Newfoundland and Labrador fishers (CIHR and SSHRC supported). Another looks at how a fishing community has turned to tourism as a cure for their economic troubles (SSHRC funded). Her interest in researching fishermen's health and safety stems from a past research study in Fogo Island where she noticed the fishermen seemed to appear older than they claimed.

Dr. Binkley has also been involved in development projects in the West Indies, Indonesia, and the Philippines, focusing on resource management and other environmental concerns (CIDA supported). In addition, she was involved in the Cache Creek, British Columbia burial site analysis.
