Administrative history

The North Colchester branch of the Red Cross Society was founded in July 1946 at Tatamagouche, Colchester County, Nova Scotia by the Tatamagouche Red Cross Auxiliary. Reverend G.E. Whidden of Tatamagouche was named as the first chair and Rev. J.C. Leadbeater of New Annan as secretary. At the first meeting Dr. Dan Murray was named president, Arthur Malcolm vice-president, and a Mr. Atkinson treasurer. The branch was formed to establish an Outpost Hospital in Tatamagouche, which was over-seen by an appointed Hospital Committee. The group took over the Fraser House property for the building of a hospital. Following the establishment of the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital, the Branch ventured into education and offered well known Red Cross courses in safety education and fostered youth groups in the area.
