Biographical history

Orren Snyder Joudrey was born at Mahone Bay in 1880. In 1905, he married Mabel Fanshaw Keddy. The couple had two children. Joudrey, who worked as a clerk in a dry goods store, became a partner, in 1911, in the Mahone Machine Company, which ceased operations in 1915. Joudrey later served for many years as Mahone Bay’s Town Clerk. He was also the Secretary-Treasurer of the local school board and a Justice of the Peace. In 1956 he self-published a history of the Anglican Parish of St. James in Mahone Bay. Joudrey died at Mahone Bay in 1960.

Custodial history

The maps (Acc. No. 2015-03-01-02) were donated in 2015 by G. Anderson, who had originally acquired them from Janet Bourgoyne.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of seven bound fire-insurance maps relating to Mahone Bay, one of which dates from 1922; whereas the other six (revised versions of 1934 maps) date from 1947. The maps, which were created by the Underwriters Survey Bureau Ltd. and issued under the auspices of the Nova Scotia Board of Fire Insurers, were likely obtained by Joudrey in his capacity as Mahone Bay’s Town Clerk.
