Administrative history

The Oakland School was opened c.1878 in the community of Oakland, Nova Scotia. The school continued to serve the community until 1958, when students from Oakland were required to attend a new consolidated school in Centre, Nova Scotia. For many years prior to consolidation, many junior and senior high-school students from Oakland attended the Mahone Bay High School.

Custodial history

The records (including Acc. No. 09.03.30) were found in the Museum’s backlog in 2017-18 and were processed in 2019.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of financial and tax records; minutes; teachers’ agreements and certificates; documents relating to school inspections; and other administrative records. The records shed light on the activities of the school’s trustees, particularly DeWolfe Burgoyne (c. 1936-1944) and Franklyn Strum (c. 1947-1951).
