Biographical history

Obed A. Ham, the son of the storekeeper Joseph Ham and Christianna Baker, was born at Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia in 1867. In 1891, he married Etta Evelyn Inglis. Ham eventually emerged as a highly respected builder of yachts, operating the O. A. Ham Yacht Works in Mahone Bay, with a branch operation in Brunswick, Georgia. In 1926 Ham copyrighted the lyrics and music for the song “Dear Old Mahone.” Ham died at Mahone Bay in 1932. A collection of Ham’s poetry was privately printed in Montreal in 1953.

Custodial history

The records (including Acc. No. 14.04.01) were found in the Mahone Bay Museum’s backlog in 2017-18 and were processed in 2019.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of sheet music for Ham’s song “Dear Old Mahone,” a copy of Ham’s Selected Poems, and a photograph of the yacht Renegaw, which Ham built for H.L. Wagner of Pen Yann, NY in 1925.
