              Lomas family fonds

              Fonds consists of collected research on the history of the Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s from its earliest records, with a special focus on gold mining and Goldenville, Nova Scotia, as well as the personal archives of the Lomas family recording their decades of public service alongside historical material gathered from their families and the community in Sherbrooke, Nova Scotia. The historical research begins with the earliest inhabitants of the Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s, and continues with the arrival of Europeans, reports on the economic development of the area, essays on regional occupations, churches, charitable organizations, schools, government, transportation, communications, energy, banking, health care, recreation, and the war effort in two world wars. It collects research on the communities of Ecum Secum, Marie Joseph, New Chester, The Liscombs, Spanish Ship Bay, Sherbrooke, Sonora, Wine Harbour, Indian Harbour, Port Hilford, Port Bickerton, Harpelville, Fisherman’s Harbour, Jordanville, Stillwater, Waternish, Melrose, Aspen, The Forks, Denver, Glenelg, Smithfield, the Caledonias, Goshen, Argyle, Garden of Eden and the St. Mary’s River. Goldenville, Nova Scotia, is covered extensively with maps, photographs, census reports and other papers. Many histories of the region are collected in this fond, including unpublished memoirs. Papers from the Prince Henry Sinclair Society, St. Mary’s Historical Society, West River Station Restoration Committee, St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Sherbrooke Library, Sherbrooke Village, Canso Historical Society, and the Liberal Party of Nova Scotia are also in this fonds, alongside a generous collection of material generated by the Lomas family themselves. There are records from the foreign service of Alton Anderson Lomas in the United States, Mexico, Belgium, and China, as well as his political work in Ontario and Nova Scotia. There is also an extensive record of the community service done by Al and Aleah Lomas, notably her work as librarian at the Sherbrooke Library, and several awards for volunteer service. In addition to the Lomas family material, this fonds holds genealogy research for many local families, notably the McKean/McKeen, Anderson, Henderson, Landesberg, and McLane families. There are photographs of local people and landscapes dating back to the 1870 opening of the first bridge over the St. Mary’s River at Sherbrooke, up to the 2005 wedding reception of Aleah Lomas Anderson and Murray Anderson, with an emphasis on the Anderson, Lomas, Palmer, and MacDonald families. The fonds also has audio and video recordings of interviews, speeches, and brief reports discussing topics of interest to the eastern shore of Nova Scotia.               He began his career as a Naval Cadet in the Royal Canadian Navy. He served in Royal Roads (RCNC) as a Cadet Captain. He became a Midshipman RCN with seniority dated 05/07/1945. He underwent training with the Royal Navy in 1945. He was then appointed as an A/Sub-Lieutenant RCN with seniority dated 03/11/1947, and later as a Sub-Lieutenant RCN with the same seniority date. He was promoted to Lieutenant (P) RCN with seniority dated 20/05/1949. He also underwent training at H.M.S. Excellent for the RN Long Gunnery Course in 1954 and served in HMCS Shearwater for Gunnery Duties in 1956. He became a Lieutenant-Commander (P) (G) RCN with seniority dated 20/05/1957 and served in HMCS Bonaventure for VS-880 Squadron in 1959. He also served in HMCS Saskatchewan and HMCS Oriole, where he was in command from 1967-69. He was later released from service. The logbook contains information about the aircraft flown, operations and exercises carried out, flight duration, flight totals, certifications earned, bombing scores of damaged or destroyed targets, locational data, as well as details about the pilot, co-pilot, and passengers. It also includes a breakdown of the types of aircraft flown between 1939-42, distinguishing between bombers and fighters. Additionally, it provides records of flying assessments and yearly totals for 1941, along with an Aiming Point Photo taken during an attack on a V-1 flying bomb at Criel-Sur-Mer in France in July 1944.               S/Lt. Frank C. Willis was born and raised in Flin Flon, Manitoba to Fred and Frances Willis. In 1952, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy and was appointed as a Midshipman (SSA) RCN with seniority dated 10/06/1952. He underwent Junior Air Officer Basic Training Course #3 in 1952 while serving in HMCS Cornwallis. He served in HMCS Quebec for Training in 1953 and was appointed as an A/Sub-Lieutenant (P) (SSA) RCN with seniority dated 01/07/1954. He underwent Flying Training in RCAF Centralia in 1953 and Jet Conversion in RCAF Gimli in 1954, and was awarded Pilot Wings on 01/07/1954. In the same year, he served in HMCS Shearwater and RNAS Lossiemouth. He also underwent Carrier Qualifications in H.M.S. Bulwark in 1955 and Banshee Training with USN 1955 in HMCS Niagara. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant (P) (SSA) RCN on 01/12/1955 and served in HMCS Shearwater for Duty with VF-870 Squadron in 1955. He was selected for permanent commission and served in Vt-40 Squadron and VF-870 Squadron in HMCS Shearwater in 1958 and 1959 respectively. He served as Watchkeeper in HMCS Outremont in 1962 and underwent Helicopter Conversion in HU-21 Squadron in HMCS Shearwater in 1964. He served in HS-50 Squadron in HMCS Shearwater in 1965 and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander RCN with seniority dated 27/05/1965. He served as Deputy Commanding Officer in HU-21 Squadron in HMCS Shearwater in 1965 and as Staff Officer Naval Air Requirements in NDHQ in 1966. He underwent Canadian Forces Staff College Course in CFB Toronto in 1967 and served in Maritime Air Requirements in NDHQ in 1968. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel (PLT) with seniority dated 01/07/1971 and served as Commanding Officer in HS-50 Squadron in CFB Shearwater in 1972. He served as Senior Staff Officer Rotary Wing in MARCOM HQ in 1974 and was promoted to the rank of Colonel (PLT) with seniority dated 01/01/1978. He served as Deputy Commander in Maritime Air Group in 1978 and underwent German Language Training in 1981. He served as Canadian Forces Attache Bonn in 1982 and as Canadian Faculty Advisor in the NATO Defence College Rome in 1985. He retired on 01/04/1989 at the rank of Colonel. Throughout his career, S/Lt. Willis flew various aircraft, including Harvard, Slilverstar, Sea Fury, Sea Vampire, Sea Hawk, Expeditor, Skynight, Banshee, and Crusader. He also flew helicopters like the HTL-6 Bell, Sikorsky Horse, Sea King, and the CH-113 Vertol. Colonel (Ret’d) FC WILLIS, RCN, CF, passed away on February 7, 2021, in Halifax, NS. SAM.1998.90.1

              This is a spiral-bound photocopy that contains two pictures of planes on the inside cover. One is black and white, and the other is in color. The second picture has accompanying information about the photograph. The item includes a certification for the Anson Aircraft and a certification of the pilot's reliability. The document contains information about the make and model of the plane flown, the pilot's name, the number of hours flown, exercises and drills recorded in numerical format, courses run, locational information of training received, monthly flying totals, ASR (Submarine Rescue Vessel) searches, bombings, and enemy sightings. It also includes information on duties at new postings such as exercises, instructional duties, and hours flown. This document also includes a record of service and a record of aircraft flown.
