Le Père Joseph Émile Hamelin était le frère de Mme Julie Hamelin Melanson. Un extrait tiré de l'Évangéline du 12 septembre 1929 nous dit ceci : " ... l'abbé Hamelin était natif de la province de Québec. Après son ordination il avait été professeur au " Collège " Sainte-Anne de Pointe-de-l'Église puis curé à Prospect. Il était curé dans la paroisse de Buttes-Amirault depuis vingt-cinq ans [lors de son décès]." D'après quelques discours écrits par ses paroissiens à l'occasion de son 25e anniversaire de sacerdoce on constate qu'il jouissait d'une grande popularité. Lors de cet événement on lui avait fait cadeau d'une automobile.
