    Administrative history

The Reading Club was founded in March 1938 as a combination literary and Christmas fancy work club at Kentville, Nova Scotia. There was a fee of one dollar a month which was used for Christmas purposes. Eventually a portion of the money was donated annually to charity. The Club's membership was entirely female and the women met regularly at members' homes to discuss books and articles and to see each other's fancy work. At meetings they also distributed amongst themselves small quizzes on Biblical and literary topics. The name of the club began as the Intelligence Club but eventually changed to the Reading Club.
