Name of creator
The Registrar of Joint Stock Companies is responsible for the incorporation and registration of companies, partnerships, societies and associations under a variety of provincial statutes. The Nova Scotia Companies Act of 1900 established the office, which was afterwards assigned to the deputy Provincial Secretary. Since the late 1960s, however, a separate agent has been appointed Registrar of Joint Stock Companies.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of four series: Partnership registration books and other material; Sector specific registration books and other records; Nova Scotia Company incorporation ledgers and other records; and Company registration ledgers and other records.
The Registry has two basic functions. It records information on companies, created under the Nova Scotia Companies Act, and other corporate bodies created under various acts of the Nova Scotia Legislature, as well as registering such entities, and those created in other jurisdictions, as being licensed to operate in Nova Scotia. Fonds consists of registers and indexes documenting the incorporation and registration of commercial companies and partnerships, cooperative associations, fishermen's bait associations, credit unions, bodies incorporated under the Marshlands Reclamation Act, fruit companies, fishing vessels, non-profit organizations, rural telephone companies, county stations registered under the Fishermen's Federation Act, and blueberry associations. Includes registers, 1883-1982, and indexes, 1883-1967. Some registers contain their own indexes. Also includes bank, insurance company and joint stock company returns, ca. 1862-1883.
Immediate source of acquisition
Some materials in this description were transferred to the Nova Scotia Archives prior to the publication of the 1976 Inventory of Manuscripts and were incorporated as part of the RG 7 (Provincial Secretary) records group. In 1986 the Registrar of Joint Stocks transferred additional materials to the Nova Scotia Archives which were then arranged as the RG 73 (Registrar of Joint Stock Companies) records group. This description includes materials from both of the previous RG groups that housed records from the Registry.
