Dr. John Graham Reid was born in 1948 in Scotland. In 1970, he received his Honours Bachelor of Arts from Oxford University, followed by his Master of Arts from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1972. In 1975, Reid obtained his Ph.D from the University of New Brunswick, where he began his teaching career that same year. Prior to his arrival to Saint Mary's University at Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1985, he also taught at Saint Thomas University and Mount Allison University. Reid was hired as associate professor of history at Saint Mary's University from 1985 to 1989, at which time he was promoted to the position of professor of history. He has been active in the Saint Mary's community through serving on various committees such as the Faculty of Arts Executive committee (1988-1993); and the Senate sub-committees of Curriculum (1988-1998), Research (1988-1998), and Graduate Studies (1988-1992). Reid was also a member of the Saint Mary's University Archives committee (1987-1991), the Association of Canadian Studies (1989-1990), and was on the Board of Directors for the Gorsebrook Research Institute (1992-1993), during which time he assisted the Institute in the preparation for the 1992 conference on the Halifax Explosion. Dr. John Reid is currently a professor of history at Saint Mary's University.
