Scope and content

Series forms part of Department of Highways and Public Works fonds and consists of photographs of road and bridges in the province. Photographs were likely accummulated by the Chief Engineer's Office.; Photographs document the "as is" condition of bridges and roads, construction, repairs and maintenance of bridges and roads, structural details, damage caused by natural disasters (floods, ice jams, etc.), demolition of bridges, road diversions, covered bridges, foot bridges and planked roads. Photographs sometimes show community landmarks such as schoolhouses, churches, houses, as well as individuals. Individuals are rarely identified, unless they are machinery operators.; This series also contains a miscellaneous collection of photographs, arranged by subject. Subjects include: automobile accidents; ferries and ferry docks; gravel pits and crusher plants: Department of Highways buildings; machinery and operators (many are identified); miscellaneous county photographs, not related to roads or bridges; roads crossing multiple counties; bridges outside of Nova Scotia; among other subjects. ; Some files include documents accompanying the photographs such as: correspondence, indexes, photograph processing invoices, original enclosures and articles or detailed captions. ; Details about the maintenance and construction work conducted on provincial roads and bridges is found in the Department of Highways' Annual Reports (Call Number: J 104 K3 R29 H638, [+ year]). The Annual Reports also contain published images from this collection of photographs.

Series is arranged by county, and within each county subdivided into two sections: bridges androads. Within each section the photographs are arranged alphabetically by bridge or road name or by community name. Miscellaneous photographs are arranged by subject.

Some of the nitrate negatives have been scanned. Scan numbers are indicated in the finding aid.

Restrictions on access

Nitrate negatives are closed for conservation reasons where prints or scans are available. Some photographs may also have access restrictions due to conservation reasons.
